At the Gold Axe and Distinguished Senior Awards Ceremony\u00a0for the\u00a0Fall\u00a02021 semester,\u00a0held Nov. 16,\u00a0President\u00a0<\/span>Jos\u00e9 Luis Cruz Rivera<\/span><\/b>\u00a0presented\u00a0the President\u2019s Prize, the Gold Axe Award and the Distinguished Senior Award to their\u00a0recipients, honoring their efforts and accomplishments during their time at NAU.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cruz Rivera awarded 29 students with the Gold Axe award, and two of those students were also awarded the President\u2019s Prize, the highest honor undergraduates can receive at NAU. <\/span>Maree\u00a0Mahkewa<\/span><\/b>, an environmental and sustainability studies major, conducted research on the pinyon-juniper woodlands and was an IndigePeer Mentor, providing support to incoming Indigenous students to help ensure a smooth transition into university life. <\/span>Angel Marshall<\/span><\/b>\u00a0is\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0biomedical\u00a0science major\u00a0who was\u00a0a mentor in the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation and\u00a0in\u00a0the Edge Leadership Experience because she wanted to help other students grow into leaders on NAU\u2019s campus, like her mentors did for her.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Distinguished Seniors are: <\/span>Avery Pope<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(College of Arts and Letters);\u00a0<\/span>Bridget Lehman\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(College of Education); <\/span>Tianpai\u00a0Le<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(College of Engineering, Informatics, and Applied Sciences);\u00a0<\/span>Melanie Palma Avila<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(College of the Environment, Forestry, and Natural Sciences);\u00a0<\/span>Enrique Ramirez\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(College of Health and Human Services);\u00a0<\/span>Megan Portillo<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(College of Social and Behavioral Sciences);\u00a0<\/span>Steven Siqueiros<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(NAU Online and Statewide);\u00a0<\/span>Kristen Canada<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(NAU-Yuma); and\u00a0<\/span>Jordyn Russek<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(The W. A. Franke College of Business).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A. Franke College of Business).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“It is humbling and inspiring to be able to recognize our students, who have accomplishment so much and contributed to and enriched our community in so many ways,” President Cruz Rivera said. “All of them have shown incredible resilience and determination to arrive at this point in their academic and personal journeys, and all of them have achieved a tremendous amount to excel in their studies and give back in such meaningful ways. Their passion is inspiring, and their involvement and leadership has added to the distinctive excellence of our Lumberjack community.”<\/p>\n

The Gold Axe Award dates back to 1933, awarding small gold axe pins to symbolize the excellence of NAU students. ASNAU, the\u00a0Office of Leadership, Engagement, Activities and Peer Mentoring and the Office of Alumni Engagement come together to determine which students have represented NAU well outside of the classroom through their involvement in student organizations, the community and their academic college.<\/span><\/p>\n
