The Cockerell Leadership Academy for Student Scholars (CLASS) offered students an opportunity to obtain a new leadership certificate.<\/li>\n<li>NAU\u2019s team from the Department of Civil Engineering, Construction Management, and Environmental Engineering, was awarded second place in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pci.org\/PCI_Docs\/News-and-Events\/News-and-Media\/2021\/2021%20Big%20Beam%20PR.pdf\">PCI Precast\/Prestressed Concrete Institute Big Beam Competition<\/a>. Students <strong>Elena Mae Reyes, Jacquolyn Crowley, Natalie Noroian <\/strong>and<strong> Nicole Neilson, <\/strong>along with faculty adviser <strong>Robin Tuchscherer<\/strong>, designed, built and tested a 20-foot precast and prestressed concrete beam.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fred DeMicco<\/strong>, professor and executive director of the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management, and <strong>Jackie Guzman<\/strong>, student in the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management, authored an article published in Hospitalitynet titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hospitalitynet.org\/publication\/4106366.html?0dfd4bc4d0a32dd2f73fa6c897fa0468\">Innovations for the Future of Senior Living: Hospitality Bridging Health (H2H)<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Golfer<strong> Kimberlee Tottori<\/strong> won the season\u2019s first Big Sky Women\u2019s Golfer of the Week award after capturing her first career individual tournament Tottori won the Hobble Creek Fall Classic with a three-round score of even-par 213 (72-71-70).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jersus Colmenares<\/strong>, lecturer in the Department of Global Languages and Cultures, was awarded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actfl.org\/assessment-research-and-development\/actfl-research-priorities\">ACTFL Research Priorities Grant<\/a>. This grant covers the funds toward constructing his research study \u201cSpanish teachers\u2019 knowledge and use of corpus data and tools for materials development: A national survey.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flower Darby<\/strong>, faculty in the Department of Educational Leadership, was a featured expert panelist at the <a href=\"https:\/\/zoom.us\/webinar\/register\/2116288666515\/WN_NCen4NX-RDS4f3IGWPY7NQ\">ACUE Getting Better Prepared for Online and Hybrid Learning webinar<\/a>. The webinar focused on how to \u201cfuture-proof\u201d college campuses by ensuring every instructor is prepared to teach effectively online.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chad Trujilo<\/strong>, associate professor in the Department of Astronomy and Planetary Science, has had his work featured in a recent National Geographic article \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/article\/planet-9-may-be-closer-and-easier-to-find-than-thought-if-it-exists\/\">Planet 9 may be closer and easier to find than thought\u2014if it exists<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Colin Chandler<\/strong>, Ph.D. student in the Department of Astronomy and Planetary Science, was featured in a Newsweek article titled, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/astronomers-want-volunteers-help-spot-water-rich-active-asteroids-1626001\">Astronomers Want Volunteers to Help Spot Water-Rich &#8216;Active&#8217; Asteroids<\/a>.\u201d Chandler was also on Flagstaff\u2019s KAFF 92.9 radio show for an interview related to his citizen science project.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Becks Carmack<\/strong>, Ph.D. student in the Department of Astronomy and Planetary Science, ran a Pop-up Science table at the Flagstaff Wednesday Market. Carmack demonstrated science experiments for both children and adults in the Flagstaff community.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anne Hamlin<\/strong>, research associate with the Center for Science Teacher and Learning (CSTL), collaborated on initiatives with nearby Native American Communities to fund <a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/cstl\/robotics-and-technology\/\">robotics education programs<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.braitmayerfoundation.org\/\">The Braitmayer Foundation<\/a> granted $35,000 to the CSTL to work with local schools to co-design robotics curriculum using culturally sustaining pedagogy that also aligns with the Arizona Math and Science Standards.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Monica Brown<\/strong>, professor in the Department of English, was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tpr.org\/podcast\/fronteras\/2021-09-17\/fronteras-bilingual-childrens-book-explores-castro-twins-humble-beginnings-to-political-rise\"> interviewed<\/a> by Texas Public Radio&#8217;s Fronteras Program. The interview highlighted her book &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/products\/small-room-big-dreams-the-journey-of-julin-and-joaquin-castro-monica-brown?variant=32257538555938\">Small Room, Big Dreams: The Journey of Juli\u00e1n and Joaquin Castro<\/a>,&#8221; all about former United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Juli\u00e1n Castro, his brother Joaquin, a Texas State Representative, and their humble upbringing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/in-the-spotlight-sept-20-24\/\">Kudos to these faculty, staff, students and programs Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?
