{"id":63660,"date":"2021-09-08T11:52:29","date_gmt":"2021-09-08T18:52:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=63660"},"modified":"2021-09-08T13:24:39","modified_gmt":"2021-09-08T20:24:39","slug":"festival-of-science-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/festival-of-science-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"If ancient Maya walls could talk, what would they say?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><em>Find out at the Flagstaff Festival of Science!<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Locally known as \u201cThe Best 10 Days of the Year,\u201d the Festival of Science continues to be a cornerstone event for the Flagstaff community, with Northern Arizona University playing a key role in the festival\u2019s success.<\/p>\n<p>Now in its 32nd year, the 2021 festival will take place Sept. 17-26, exploring the theme \u201cStories in Stone.\u201d NAU professor and prominent archaeologist <strong>Jaime Awe<\/strong> will kick off the festival by delivering the W. L. Gore &amp; Associates Keynote Presentation, \u201cWhen Stones Speak: Decoding the Messages Embedded in Ancient Maya Monuments,\u201d from Ardrey Auditorium on Sept. 17.<\/p>\n<p>Awe (pronounced ah-way) will showcase exciting discoveries he and his team have made about life in ancient Maya cities, which were<a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/ad-image.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-63662 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/ad-image.png\" alt=\"Flagstaff Festival of Science poster: Accessible PDF is available by clicking the photo.\" width=\"363\" height=\"696\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2021\/09\/ad-image.png 363w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2021\/09\/ad-image-156x300.png 156w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 363px) 100vw, 363px\" \/><\/a> hidden in the jungles of Belize. Through the\u00a0use of technology revealing buried Maya structures and DNA studies on remains in\u00a0newly discovered tombs, the team extracted clues about the human condition in ancient Mesoamerica.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s Festival of Science is a wonderful opportunity for me to share results of my long and ongoing research on Maya civilization and on the significant information that is encoded in the monuments of the ancient Maya,\u201d Awe said.<\/p>\n<p>Through active participation by NAU scientists, artists and educators, as well as through a robust sponsorship commitment, the university supports the Flagstaff community through the festival in a variety of other ways, including the traditional science-themed ballet presented by NAU\u2019s Community Music and Dance Academy; the VPR Innovation Lecture Series featuring associate professor <strong>O\u2019neil Guthrie<\/strong>, assistant professor <strong>Emily Cope<\/strong> and associate professor <strong>Gerrick Lindberg<\/strong>; campus sky viewing events at the Lutz Observatory; a 3-D printing workshop at Cline Library\u2019s MakerLab; and more.<\/p>\n<p>The 2021 festival continues to emphasize hands-on learning, interaction with scientists and opportunities to explore through self-guided tours, socially distanced walks and outdoor activities\u2014including Science in the Park.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the longest-running festival of its kind in the world, we cannot thank the community enough for the support we receive.
