In 2001 he served as EKU\u2019s interim president.<\/p>\n<p>In a news release announcing his award, the university called Hughes \u201cone of the nation\u2019s finest educators and administrators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The school also commended Hughes\u2019 civic engagement, citing his 1998 recognition as Kansas Citizen of the Year and his current role as chair of the National Amtrak Customer Advisory Committee.<\/p>\n<p>Hughes will recognize candidates from the university\u2019s Colleges of Arts and Sciences and Business and Technology at EKU&#8217;s Dec. 17 commencement ceremonies at the Alumni Coliseum in Richmond.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/president-emeritus-hughes-honored-by-eastern-kentucky-university\/\">Northern Arizona University\u2019s 12th president,\u00a0Eugene Hughes, will receive an honorary doctor of laws degree from Eastern Kentucky University when he addresses graduates at the school\u2019s fall commencement ceremonies later this month.
