Mellon Foundation as part of the Federated Repositories of Accessible Materials for Higher Education II project to fund the second phase of Cline Library&#8217;s project, which aims to streamline the process of providing resources for students with print disabilities. The project will focus on developing a membership-based secure repository for shared remediated texts and the workflows that librarians and disability services offices will use to upload them. Director of Disability Resources <strong>Jamie Axelrod<\/strong>, Cline Library dean <strong>Cynthia Childrey<\/strong> and assistant archivist of digital programs <strong>Kelly Phillips<\/strong>\u00a0are part of NAU\u2019s implementation team.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>Special Collections and Archives\u00a0(SCA)<\/strong> at Cline Library received an $18,129 grant from the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona for its project, \u201cThe Shades of Route 66 in Arizona: Celebrating Diversity along Arizona\u2019s Historic Route 66.\u201d\u00a0Two student interns, supported by SCA archivists\u00a0<strong>Peter Runge <\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Sean Evans<\/strong>, associate professor of ethnic studies\u00a0<strong>Ricardo Guthrie<\/strong> and\u00a0chair of the Department of Geography, Planning and Recreation <strong>Mark Manone,\u00a0<\/strong>will create a public history project focused on the under-represented story of diversity along\u202fhistoric\u202fRoute 66. The final product will be a freely available online educational exhibit using the\u202fStoryMaps\u202fplatform and hosted by NAU\u2019s Cline Library.<\/li>\n<li>Anthropology professor <strong>Chris Downum <\/strong>and <strong>Leszek Pawlowicz<\/strong>, adjunct faculty in the Department of Anthropology, had their work on <a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/ancient-pottery\/#.YLfVFvlKg2w\">sorting pottery with computers<\/a> featured in the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/25\/science\/archaeologist-neural-network-study.html\">Archaeologists vs. Computers: A Study Tests Who\u2019s Best at Sifting the Past<\/a>\u201d published by <em>The New York Times<\/em>. They were also featured on<a href=\"https:\/\/scitechdaily.com\/archaeologists-pioneer-new-technology-to-sort-ancient-pottery\/\"> SciTechDaily<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fredricka Stoller<\/strong>, emerita professor of the Applied Linguistics\/TESL program, gave a keynote address titled, \u201cGood News about L2 Reading-Skills Development\u201d at the 11<sup>th<\/sup> Annual International Conference on Education, Language and Literature. Doctoral students <strong>Kevin Hirschi<\/strong> and <strong>Maria Kostromitina<\/strong> also conducted a workshop titled, \u201cPerceptions of Accented English: Promoting Awareness of Speaker Variation and Social Justice in the ELT Classroom\u201d and recent doctoral graduate <strong>Garrett Larson<\/strong> conducted a workshop titled, \u201cIntegrating the Four Skills in Language Learning: An Instructional Routine.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Amit Kumar<\/strong>, assistant professor of physical therapy and athletic training, was featured in the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.knau.org\/post\/epidemiologist-equitable-vaccine-distribution-key-india\">Epidemiologist: Equitable Vaccine Distribution Key In India<\/a>\u201d on KNAU. He spoke about how India\u2019s crisis is a global problem as well as how it is deeply personal to him because of family and friends there.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Melissa Armstrong<\/strong>, director of Interdisciplinary Global Programs (IGP); <strong>Benning Tieke<\/strong>, IGP faculty coordinator and senior lecturer of Spanish; and <strong>Marcela Pino Alcaraz<\/strong>, assistant director of IGP, co-authored the article, \u201cA Pedagogy of Inclusion Designed to Empower Global Ambassadors of Positive Change\u201d published in <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.ymaws.com\/www.diversitynetwork.org\/resource\/resmgr\/documents\/final_winter_spring_2021_glo.pdf\">The Global Impact Exchange<\/a>, a quarterly publication of the Diversity Abroad Annual Conference. The article discussed the IGP program and its three pillars of design.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Con Slobodchikoff<\/strong>, professor emeritus of biology, was a guest on BYUradio\u2019s Constant Wonder for the conversation titled, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.byuradio.org\/WON-2021-05-24-The-Complex-Language-of-Prairie-Dogs\">The Complex Language of Prairie Dogs<\/a>.\u201d He provided expertise on how artificial intelligence technology can be used to decode animal communication.<\/li>\n<li>Associate professor of forestry <strong>Matthew Bowker<\/strong>, assistant research professor of forestry <strong>Anita Antoninka<\/strong> and doctoral student of forestry <strong>Lydia Bailey<\/strong> received a $64,284 grant from the Bureau of Land Management. Their project will continue researching the Earth\u2019s biocrust and rare plant restoration on Mojave Desert gypsum soils.<\/li>\n<li>Bowker also co-authored the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S2468584421000453?via%3Dihub\">Restoring post-fire ecosystems with biocrusts: living, photosynthetic soil surfaces<\/a>\u201d published in Current Opinion in Environmental Science &amp; Health. The article highlighted the important roles of biocrusts and discussed its potential for improving soil fertility and stability in post-fire ecosystems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mike Smith<\/strong>, head coach and director of track &amp; field and cross country, was announced the Big Sky Outdoor Track &amp; Field Coach of the Year for both NAU men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams. This is the second time he has earned the honor for the men\u2019s team and the third time for the women\u2019s team.<\/li>\n<li>Assistant professor <strong>Steven Gehrke<\/strong> and undergraduate student <strong>Michael Huff<\/strong>, both from the Department of Geography, Planning and Recreation, co-authored the article, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S2213624X21000742?via%3Dihub\">Social and trip-level predictors of pooled ride-hailing service adoption in the Greater Boston region<\/a>&#8221; published in Case Studies on Transport Policy. The study found ridesharing services such as UberPool and Lyft Share tend to be favored most by younger, lower income survey respondents with limited vehicle access and that pooled service adoption is more likely to replace travel via public transit, walking and cycling.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jut Wynne<\/strong>, assistant research professor of biological sciences, published the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2021\/05\/belizes-maya-forest-corridor-a-missing-link-to-giant-rainforest-preserve-commentary\/\">Belize\u2019s Maya Forest Corridor a \u2018missing link\u2019 to giant rainforest reserve<\/a>\u201d in Mongabay. The article discussed the importance of the largest rainforest preserve in Central America. He also co-authored the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41558-021-01057-y\">Don\u2019t forget subterranean ecosystems in climate change agendas<\/a>\u201d published in Nature Climate Change.<\/li>\n<li><strong>James Bowie<\/strong>, principal lecturer of sociology, published the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90638863\/colonial-pipelines-branding-is-a-disaster-that-shouldve-been-a-warning-sign\">Colonial Pipeline\u2019s branding is a disaster. That should\u2019ve been a warning sign<\/a>\u201d in\u00a0Fast Company. The article argued that the company\u2019s outdated name and logo were indicative of its vulnerability to cyberattack.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Archie Amerson<\/strong>, NAU Athletics Hall of Fame inductee for football, was selected as one of 99 divisional player candidates for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame sponsored by the National Football Foundation. He received the Walter Payton Award in 1996 and set NAU\u2019s single-season record for rushing yards (2,079) and rushing touchdowns (25) during that year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/spotlight-june-4-2021\/\">Kudos to these faculty, staff and programs Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?
