{"id":62893,"date":"2021-06-02T11:39:05","date_gmt":"2021-06-02T18:39:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=62893"},"modified":"2021-06-02T11:39:05","modified_gmt":"2021-06-02T18:39:05","slug":"edgeley-wildfire-evacuation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/edgeley-wildfire-evacuation\/","title":{"rendered":"To stay or to go: NAU forestry professor receives grant to investigate human decision-making to better inform wildfire evacuation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Catrin Edgeley<\/strong>, assistant professor of Northern Arizona University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/forestry\/\">School of Forestry<\/a> has received a $400,000 grant as part of the National Center for Atmospheric Research\u2019s (NCAR) Early Career Faculty Innovator Program to investigate how people view wildfires and make decisions about whether to evacuate.<\/p>\n<p>The grant, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, will allow Edgeley to work with NCAR scientists and use NCAR model visualizations from recent fire events to explore how environmental cues related to weather and fire behavior influence household decision-making during wildfire evacuation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Wildfire-damage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-62915 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Wildfire-damage.jpg\" alt=\"Wildfire damage to cars\" width=\"267\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2021\/06\/Wildfire-damage.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2021\/06\/Wildfire-damage-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2021\/06\/Wildfire-damage-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2021\/06\/Wildfire-damage-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><\/a>\u201cPrevious research on household evacuation during wildfire indicates many residents in fire-prone areas will \u2018wait and see\u2019 how a fire event plays out before deciding what to do rather than proactively committing to evacuation, sheltering in place or staying to defend their property,\u201d Edgeley said. \u201cThat can lead to unsafe or uninformed decision-making as the window of opportunity for preparation closes. We hope to develop a clearer understanding about what specifically motivates people to commit to a path of action so that we can frame emergency communication during fires in a more meaningful way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NCAR Early Career Innovator Program was created to address complex research problems by building partnerships between NCAR scientists and early career faculty at other universities or colleges. New cohorts for the program are selected every two years. Social science faculty, along with a graduate student of their choice, are paired with NCAR\u2019s atmospheric scientists to develop interdisciplinary convergence research at NCAR\u2019s Mesa Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado. The theme for the program\u2019s 2021-23 cohort this year is \u201cActionable Earth System Science.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Edgeley\u2019s project will start by modeling recent wildfires, focusing on how environmental changes like a fire\u2019s rate of spread, changing windspeeds and decreasing air quality unfold over the duration of the fire event. Those models will then be turned into interactive visualizations.<\/p>\n<p>The visualizations serve as a memory recall tool and will be used to improve recall about traumatic or high-stress wildfire events, which will help researchers pinpoint what specific environmental changes motivate people\u2019s decisions to evacuate.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Wildfire-Flagstaff.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-62916 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Wildfire-Flagstaff.png\" alt=\"Wildfire from downtown view\" width=\"346\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2021\/06\/Wildfire-Flagstaff.png 1504w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2021\/06\/Wildfire-Flagstaff-300x223.png 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2021\/06\/Wildfire-Flagstaff-1024x761.png 1024w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2021\/06\/Wildfire-Flagstaff-768x571.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 346px) 100vw, 346px\" \/><\/a>\u201cWe hope to understand how decisions associated with sudden local environmental change vary both between fires and across a gradient of households affected differently by the same fire event,\u201d Edgeley said.<\/p>\n<p>She said earlier studies have indicated that environmental cues like fire behavior are an influence, but it is not clear whether there are key thresholds that become common \u201ctipping points\u201d at which households put their planned behaviors into practice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy understanding how environmental contexts can motivate proactive behaviors during wildfire, we can help improve public safety and community adaptation to fire risk,\u201d Edgeley said. \u201cThis project can inform more tailored education programs about evacuation and improve emergency communication during wildfires by focusing on specific components of fire behavior and weather changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once these key environmental cues and the kinds of behaviors they might evoke in people are identified, researchers can better inform residents and their decision making about evacuation by including those specific details in public communication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur NAU-NCAR partnership will allow us to develop a novel approach to understanding human behavior during fires,\u201d Edgeley said. \u201cAtmospheric models are rarely shared with the public, and we\u2019re hoping that integrating those outputs with social science will uncover new information about why people respond in certain ways to approaching wildfires.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>More about the National Center for Atmospheric Research<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Established in 1960, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ncar.ucar.edu\/who-we-are\">National Center for Atmospheric Research<\/a> was the first federally funded research and development center created to understand the behavior of the atmosphere and related Earth and geospace systems. It provides the university community, particularly those in the atmospheric and Earth system sciences, world-class facilities and services to work in that go beyond what an individual institution can offer. This includes access to supercomputers, research aircraft, sophisticated computer models and extensive data sets.
