{"id":62619,"date":"2021-04-28T10:11:06","date_gmt":"2021-04-28T17:11:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=62619"},"modified":"2021-04-28T13:50:38","modified_gmt":"2021-04-28T20:50:38","slug":"the-class-of-spring2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/the-class-of-spring2021\/","title":{"rendered":"The Class of 2021: Celebrating NAU\u2019s largest graduating class"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, more than 6,000 Northern Arizona University students who have applied for graduation will join fellow Lumberjacks in a virtual commencement ceremony as the class of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>NAU\u2019s virtual ceremony will be available at 11 a.m. Friday, April 30, though the recording will be available via\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/commencement\/\">nau.edu\/commencement<\/a>\u00a0through the summer. Viewers in the first 24 hours can post shoutouts to friends, family members and fellow graduates on social media using #naugrad to be featured on the commencement feed.<\/p>\n<p>Students and their families can view their graduates\u2019 photos on-screen and hear their names read aloud via a link found on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/commencement\/\">NAU\u2019s commencement website<\/a>. The virtual ceremony will include a message and degree conferral from President\u00a0<strong>Rita Cheng<\/strong>, along with Provost\u00a0<strong>Diane Stearns<\/strong>\u00a0and Graduate College Dean<strong>\u00a0Maribeth Watwood<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nau.kudoboard.com\/boards\/i7gwdSh0\/naugrad\">Want to publicly congratulate your graduate? Leave photos and messages on Kudoboard.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is an exciting moment for the Class of 2021,\u201d Cheng said. \u201cThis is the moment our Lumberjacks have been waiting for\u2014a chance to celebrate their dedication and hard work that have led them to this day. I know the Class of 2021 will use the skills they have acquired and memories they have made to find success in all they do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of the more than 6,000 students who have applied for graduation, 1,036 are graduate students from NAU\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/graduate-college\">67 master\u2019s programs and 24 doctoral programs<\/a>, and 4,875 are undergraduate students from the Flagstaff Mountain campus, statewide locations and online, plus 110 students enrolled in NAU\u2019s unique\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/online\/self-paced-personalized-learning\/\">Personalized Learning program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Breakdown of graduates by college:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>College of Arts and Letters: 451<\/li>\n<li>College of Education: 696<\/li>\n<li>College of Engineering, Informatics, and Applied Sciences: 397<\/li>\n<li>College of the Environment, Forestry, and Natural Sciences: 834<\/li>\n<li>College of Health and Human Services: 1,005<\/li>\n<li>College of Social and Behavioral Sciences: 1,382<\/li>\n<li>NAU Online, Statewide and Education Innovation: 408<\/li>\n<li>NAU Yuma: 150<\/li>\n<li>W. A. Franke College of Business: 698<\/li>\n<li>Honors College: 155<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This year, the College of Arts and Letters will graduate its first two students, <strong>Kiara Gissel Pe\u00f1a<\/strong> <strong>Ibarra<\/strong> and <strong>Alexander Pompa<\/strong>, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/english\/programs\/bachelors-degrees\/accelerated-ba-ma\/\">English Department\u2019s BA-MA program<\/a>. The program\u00a0was designed to identify strong undergraduate students with an interest in linguistics and provide them with the opportunity to stay for an extra year and receive both their\u00a0BA and MA-TESL degree in five years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Daniel Kramer <\/strong>will be the first student to graduate in <a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/school-of-informatics-computing-and-cyber-systems\/undergraduate\/\">astroinformatics<\/a>, a new emphasis within the undergraduate informatics program in the College of Engineering, Informatics, and Applied Sciences that collaborates with the Department of Astronomy and Planetary Science.<\/p>\n<p>Interim department chair <strong>David Trilling<\/strong> said the work Kramer has done as an undergraduate researcher at NAU is helping to define this emerging sub-industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not an exaggeration to say that without Daniel\u2019s terrific work, we would not have been able to submit several funding proposals for NASA and NSF,\u201d Trilling said. \u201cIn the next 15 years, because of his work, I fully expect that NAU will be the world leader in this particular sub-topic.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/the-class-of-spring2021\/\">Today, more than 6,000 Northern Arizona University students who have applied for graduation will join fellow Lumberjacks in a virtual commencement ceremony as the class of 2021.
