This is the fourth year in a row the team has beat ASU and UArizona to advance to national competition in the Water Environment Federation competition.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jaime Begay<\/strong>, graduate student of public and Indigenous health and research assistant with the Navajo Native American Research Center for Health Partnership, received the Louis H. and Betty J. Quayle Scholarship. The scholarship provides up to $4,000 per semester to new or continuing degree-seeking graduate students who are members of a federally recognized Native American tribe or nation.<\/li>\n<li>Senior quarterback <strong>Keondre Wudtee<\/strong> was named the ROOT Sports Offensive Player of the Week by the Big Sky Conference. This is the first award of his career and the first time an NAU football player has earned an honor this season.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Taylor Lane<\/strong>, doctoral student of interdisciplinary health;<strong> Derek Sonderegger<\/strong>, associate professor of mathematics and statistics;<strong>\u00a0Whitney Holeva-Eklund<\/strong>, doctoral student of interdisciplinary health; <strong>Timothy Behrens<\/strong>, associate professor of health sciences; and<strong>\u00a0Dirk de Heer<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>associate professor of health sciences co-authored the article,\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/europepmc.org\/article\/med\/33632651\">Seasonal variability in weight gain among American Indian, Black, White, and Hispanic children: A 3.5 year study<\/a>\u201d published\u00a0in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. The study examined seasonal weight variability over 3.5 years among ethnically diverse children, which included 2,184 American Indian\/Alaska Native children, an understudied demographic.<\/li>\n<li>Several graduate students studying applied linguistics and who are teaching at the Program in Intensive English presented at the virtual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaal.org\/2021-save-the-date\">American Association of Applied Linguistics (AAAL) 2021 Conference<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesol.org\/convention-2021\">Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) 2021 International Convention<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/ualc.as.ua.edu\/\">University of Alabama Language Conference 2021<\/a>.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Marcella Caprario<\/strong> (AAAL) &#8211; \u201cSupporting University Students\u2019 Development of L2 Pragmatic Competence\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brock Wojtalewicz<\/strong> (AAAL) &#8211; \u201cA receptive vocabulary size test for French: Replication study and item analyses\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>An Nguyen<\/strong> (AAAL) &#8211; \u201c\u2018An earthquake occurred many people to death?!\u2019: Acceptable vs. unacceptable resultative sentences in English\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Nguyen and <strong>Audrey Murray<\/strong> (TESOL) &#8211; \u201cUsing Ted-Ed in Asynchronous Classes\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jennifer Glng <\/strong>(Alabama) &#8211; \u201cAn Analysis of Accent Use in Commercials in the United States\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The NAU women\u2019s soccer team had six student-athletes honored with Big Sky postseason conference accolades.\n<ul>\n<li>Junior <strong>Madison Montgomery<\/strong> earned a First Team All-Conference honors and received the Co-Offensive MVP and the Golden Boot awards.<\/li>\n<li>Senior <strong>Paige Maling<\/strong> earned a place on the All-Conference First Team.<\/li>\n<li>Senior <strong>Taryn Benham<\/strong> and sophomores <strong>Rylie Curran<\/strong> and <strong>Abby Donathan <\/strong>earned All-Conference Second Team honors.<\/li>\n<li>Senior <strong>Emma Robson<\/strong> earned All-Conference Honorable Mention.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/academic-success-centers\/supplemental-instruction\/\">Supplemental Instruction (SI)<\/a>Leaders selected to receive the NAU Spring 2021 SI Excellence in Leadership Award were: <strong>Kyle Thomas<\/strong>, <strong>Emily Waffle<\/strong>, <strong>Gabriela Gardner<\/strong>, <strong>Richard Howard<\/strong>, <strong>Raini Leveen<\/strong>, <strong>Iliana Martinez<\/strong>, <strong>Nicole Neilson<\/strong>, <strong>Janae Ziebell<\/strong> and <strong>Mariana Jones<\/strong>. The following SI Leaders were selected by their peers to receive the Spring 2021 SI Excellence in Peer Leadership Award: <strong>Paige Knaub<\/strong>, <strong>Isaac Alstrin<\/strong> and <strong>Sarah Kline<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Haley Dunleavy<\/strong>, doctoral student in biology and recent graduate of the science communication certificate program, was chosen as a summer 2021 AAAS Mass Media Science &amp; Engineering Fellow.
