{"id":62428,"date":"2021-04-08T10:37:35","date_gmt":"2021-04-08T17:37:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=62428"},"modified":"2021-04-08T10:37:35","modified_gmt":"2021-04-08T17:37:35","slug":"student-spotlight-april-9-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/student-spotlight-april-9-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"In the Student Spotlight: April 9, 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kudos to these students<\/p>\n<p>Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?<\/p>\n<p>E-mail your announcements to <a href=\"mailto:Inside@nau.edu\">Inside@nau.edu<\/a>, or use our <a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/news-tip\/#.YEjwNWhKg2w\">online submission form<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Undergraduate student <strong>Michelle Kearney<\/strong> from the Department of Astronomy and Planetary Sciences (APS) virtually presented the poster, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hou.usra.edu\/meetings\/lpsc2021\/pdf\/2078.pdf\">Robotic Exploration Potential of Martian Caves<\/a>\u201d at the 52<sup>nd<\/sup> annual <a href=\"https:\/\/lpsc2021.vfairs.com\/\">Lunar and Planetary Sciences Conference<\/a>. <strong>Jut Wynne<\/strong> with the Merriam-Powell Center for Environmental Research and part-time faculty with the Center for Adaptable Western Landscapes and the late <strong>Nadine Barlow<\/strong> of APS also co-authored the study.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>men\u2019s and women\u2019s cross-country teams<\/strong> qualified for several U.S. Track &amp; Field and Cross Country Coaches Association individual and team All-Academic Honors. The men\u2019s team maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.29 this season and earned the National Scholar Team of the Year title, the third time in program history. The women maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.57. Below are student-athletes who received individual honors.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Blaise Ferro<\/strong>, senior in educational leadership<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ryan Raff<\/strong>, junior in psychological sciences<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nico Young<\/strong>, freshman in exercise science<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jesselyn Bries<\/strong>, sophomore in special and elementary education<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pipi Eitel<\/strong>, senior in biology<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jessa Hanson<\/strong>, junior in biology<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bryn Morley<\/strong>, junior in environmental and sustainability studies<\/li>\n<li><strong>Delaney Rasmussen<\/strong>, senior in human relations<\/li>\n<li><strong>Annika Reiss<\/strong>, sophomore in elementary education<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Alumni <strong>Ryleigh Fitzpatrick<\/strong> and <strong>Robyn Meier<\/strong> and associate professor <strong>Mark Loeffler<\/strong>, all from APS, co-authored the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/2041-8213\/abe415\">The Contribution of Electrons to the Sputter-produced O<sub>2<\/sub> Exosphere on Europa<\/a>\u201d published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. The study was the first work to systematically evaluate and quantify the composition of the sputtered material from water ice during electron irradiation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Annika Gustafsson<\/strong>, doctoral student of APS, was lead author on the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1538-3873\/abe2f4\">Science Commissioning of NIHTS: The Near-infrared High Throughput Spectrograph on the Lowell Discovery Telescope<\/a>\u201d published in Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. The article is a summary of the Near-Infrared High Throughput Spectrograph operations, commissioning, data reduction procedures and an overview of select science cases that will be pursued further.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anna Engle<\/strong>, doctoral student of astronomy and planetary science, was the lead author on the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2103.15978\">Phase Diagram for the Methane-Ethane System and its Implications for Titan&#8217;s Lakes<\/a>\u201d published in Earth and Planetary Astrophysics. This was her first published study as lead author. Also co-authoring the article was <strong>Jennifer Hanley<\/strong>, collaborative campus associate of the Astrophysical Ice Lab; <strong>Will Grundy<\/strong>, adjunct of the Astrophysical Ice Lab; <strong>Shyanne Dustrud<\/strong>, doctoral student of applied physics and materials science; <strong>Garrett Thompson<\/strong>, former graduate student; <strong>Gerrick Lindberg<\/strong>, associate professor of applied physics and materials science; and <strong>Steve Tegler<\/strong>, professor of APS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/student-spotlight-april-9-2021\/\">Kudos to these students Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?
