The GRFP award provides an annual stipend and an education allowance as well as mentoring and networking opportunities, all of which allow graduate students to be more independent in their research and branch out from grant-funded projects.<\/p>\n<p>NAU\u2019s winners are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jessica Archibald<\/strong>, a master\u2019s student in environmental science and policy in the School of Earth and Sustainability (SES)<\/li>\n<li><strong>John Casta\u00f1eda<\/strong>, a doctoral student in applied physics and materials science<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jonathan Chin<\/strong>, a senior majoring in physics and mechanical engineering<\/li>\n<li><strong>Megan Gialluca<\/strong>, a senior studying physics and astrophysics<\/li>\n<li><strong>Andy L\u00f3pez-Oquendo<\/strong>, a doctoral student in astronomy and planetary science<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ethan Taber<\/strong>, a master\u2019s student in environmental science and policy in SES\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_62202\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-62202\" style=\"width: 217px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Jonathan-Chin.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-62202\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Jonathan-Chin-217x300.png\" alt=\"Jonathan Chin\" width=\"217\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2021\/03\/Jonathan-Chin-217x300.png 217w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2021\/03\/Jonathan-Chin.png 580w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-62202\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Jonathan Chin in a research lab<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cNAU has a long history of excellence across all avenues of STEM research, and I\u2019m pleased to see that recognized every year through the NSF\u2019s selection of GRFP winners,\u201d President <strong>Rita Cheng<\/strong> said. \u201cCreating new knowledge has never been more important, and these students are already proving to be leaders in their field. Congratulations to all six of these students; we\u2019re proud of you and excited to follow your continued contributions to science and discovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Archibald, pictured in the top photo on a research trip in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, is from Idaho and came to NAU for her bachelor\u2019s degree as well. She will focus on the human dimensions of mangrove restoration in the Mesoamerican Reef Ecoregion.<\/p>\n<p>Casta\u00f1eda, who earned his bachelor\u2019s degree at NAU, is a second-year APMS doctoral student. His research investigates the solid-liquid interface of light-activated microswimmers in order to engineer desired motion, collective motion and responsive self-assembly as a function of liquid aqueous, external fields and morphology of microparticles.\u00a0He co-authored a 2018 publication, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/smll.201801860\">Light-Activated, Multi-Semiconductor Hybrid Microswimmers<\/a>\u201d in the journal Small.<\/p>\n<p>Chin, a fifth-year undergraduate student from the Bay Area, will start his Ph.D. at Georgia Tech in the fall, where he will research new ferroelectrical materials in energy harvesting applications. His research proposal focused on the characterization of polymer-based micelles toward the synthesis of artificial chlorosomes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_62200\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-62200\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Megan-Gialluca.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-62200\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Megan-Gialluca-300x277.jpg\" alt=\"Megan Gialluca\" width=\"300\" height=\"277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2021\/03\/Megan-Gialluca-300x277.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2021\/03\/Megan-Gialluca-768x710.jpg 768w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2021\/03\/Megan-Gialluca.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-62200\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Megan Gialluca at an occultation event for the Lucy mission with Lowell Observatory<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Gialluca, who came to NAU from New Hampshire, also will start a Ph.D. program in the fall. In addition to winning a Goldwater Scholarship, she has worked on modelling on the James Webb Space Telescope, participated in the NSF\u2019s Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) at Harvard and worked with Lowell Observatory astronomers to expand its network of meteor camera and create a database of observations.<\/p>\n<p>L\u00f3pez-Oquendo, who is from Humacao, Puerto Rico, is in his second year of his Ph.D. His research has been on small bodies\u2019 physical characterization in the solar system, particularly on near-Earth asteroids (NEAs), with the aim of better understanding these asteroids by combining telescopic photometry, spectroscopy, radar and lab experiments.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_62199\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-62199\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Ethan-Taber-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-62199\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Ethan-Taber-1-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"Ethan Taber\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2021\/03\/Ethan-Taber-1-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2021\/03\/Ethan-Taber-1.jpg 631w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-62199\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Ethan Taber does field work on plant response to a fire.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Taber, of Ponca City, Oklahoma, is a second-year master\u2019s student; he will graduate in April and begin a Ph.D. His thesis research is focused on compositional and functional response to disturbance and simulated warming along a burn severity gradient in the Museum Fire site.
