The Princeton Review provides personalized, innovative, best-in-class private tutoring, test prep and admission products and services.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Michael Rulon<\/strong>, senior lecturer in the Department of Global Languages and Cultures, published a translation of the essay, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.asymptotejournal.com\/nonfiction\/the-description-of-egypt-or-collection-of-the-observations-and-research-which-were-performed-in-egypt-during-the-expedition-of-the-french-army-baron-dominique-jean-larrey\/\">Notes on the Physical Form of Egyptians and of the Different Races that Live in Egypt Followed by some Reflections on the Embalming of Mummies<\/a>\u201d written by Baron Jean-Dominique Larrey. The essay is an excerpt from the Description of Egypt, a 23-volume work that marked the beginning of the modern field of Egyptology, commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte following his 1798 invasion of Egypt.<\/li>\n<li>Emergency manager <strong>Robert Church<\/strong> was recognized as Faculty of the Month by the Arizona Foundation for Legal Services &amp; Education for his continued work with the organization that oversees Arizona\u2019s School Resource Officer program. Church was a former resource officer and uses that experience to research and develop interactive lessons for the program to implement in-person and online.<\/li>\n<li>Professor of English <strong>Laura Gray-Rosendale<\/strong> and former graduate student <strong>Haley Stammen <\/strong>co-authored the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/wac.colostate.edu\/jbw\/v39n1\/\">Using Blackboard Collaborate Ultra with Basic Writers and in a Graduate Course Teaching Basic Writing<\/a>\u201d published in the Journal of Basic Writing. Though it was written pre-pandemic, the article has relevance for the current use of programs like Collaborate and Zoom to teach students writing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chun-Hsing (Jun) Ho<\/strong>, associate professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, Construction Management, and Environmental Engineering (CECMEE), co-authored the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0165032721000331?via%3Dihub\">The Psychological impact of COVID-19 and restrictive measures in the world<\/a>\u201d published in the Journal of Affective Disorders. The study aims to establish the psychological impact that the pandemic is entailing in regards to levels of stress, anxiety, depression and the risks of developing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.<\/li>\n<li>Assistant professors of CECMEE <strong>Brendan Russo<\/strong> and <strong>Amin Mohebbi <\/strong>co-authored the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/19439962.2020.1869875\">Analysis of factors affecting the frequency of crashes on interstate freeways by vehicle type considering multiple weather variables<\/a>\u201d published in the Journal of Transportation Safety &amp; Security. The findings of the study provide insights that may be useful in planning countermeasures to improve freeway safety.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Paul Flikkema<\/strong>, professor of SICCS; <strong>Bertrand Cambou<\/strong>, professor in the Department of Applied Physics and Materials Science; and <strong>James Palmer<\/strong>, interim associate dean for the College of Engineering, Informatics and Applied Sciences and professor of SICCS had a new U.S. Patent Application Publication titled, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/patentimages.storage.googleapis.com\/c8\/f4\/72\/82e477a7f7667b\/US20200401691A1.pdf\">System and method for active cyberattack defense<\/a>.\u201d Their work creates computing systems with dynamic architectures that may be used to secure against code-injection attacks and other exploits.<\/li>\n<li>Professor <strong>Scott Goetz<\/strong> and assistant research professor <strong>Patrick Jantz<\/strong> of SICCS co-authored the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33293507\/\">Anthropogenic modification of forests means only 40% of remaining forests have high ecosystem integrity<\/a>\u201d published in Nature Communications. The study generates a globally consistent, continuous index of forest condition as determined by the degree of anthropogenic modification.<\/li>\n<li>Assistant professor of mechanical engineering <strong>Amirhossein Arzani<\/strong> co-authored the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0021929021000191?via%3Dihub\">Fluid-structure coupled biotransport processes in aortic valve disease<\/a>\u201d published in the Journal of Biomechanics. The study shows that blood flow physics and coherent structures regulate the flow-mediated biological processes involved in aortic valve calcification and thrombosis and could be used in the design process to optimize heart valve replacement durability.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Frederick DeMicco<\/strong>, executive director of the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management, was featured in the New York Times article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/01\/26\/business\/ghost-kitchens-hotels-coronavirus.html\">Ghost Kitchens Find a Home in Empty Hotels<\/a>.\u201d The article discusses the emerging partnerships between hotels and restaurants.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nancy Johnson<\/strong>, Regents\u2019 professor of the School of Earth and Sustainability, and doctoral student of biology <strong>Kara Gibson<\/strong> co-authored the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fpls.2020.627345\/full\">Understanding Multilevel Selection May Facilitate Management of Arbuscular Mycorrhizae in Sustainable Agroecosystems<\/a>\u201d published in Frontiers in Plant Science. Johnson also published the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11104-021-04848-6\">Soil biota suppress maize growth and influence root traits under continuous monoculture<\/a>\u201d published in Plant Soil with former visiting NAU scholars <strong>Lin Mao<\/strong> and <strong>Yongjun Liu<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Yuly Asencion-Delaney<\/strong>, professor in the Department of Global Languages and Cultures, published the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/flan.12496\">Writing in Spanish as a heritage language: A multidimensional analysis<\/a>\u201d in Foreign Language Annals. The study examines the lexical and grammatical variation in the academic writing at the college level of Spanish heritage learners with two levels of Spanish proficiency.<\/li>\n<li>Professor of history <strong>Michael Amundson<\/strong> had his book, \u201cTalking Machine West: A History and Catalogue of Tin Pan Alley\u2019s Western Recordings, 1902-1918\u201d featured on Sirius Radio\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ridersinthesky.com\/news\/05-29-13\/new-classic-cowboy-corral-episodes-coming-soon\">Ranger Doug\u2019s Classic Cowboy Corral<\/a>.\u201d The show, which features an hour of vintage cowboy music and comedy, played the 1906 Edison Cylinder recording \u201cCheyenne\u201d and discussed the book and singer Billy Murray.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kevin Gurney<\/strong>, professor of SICCS, had his study featured in the New York Times article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/02\/climate\/cities-greenhouse-gas-emissions.html\">S. Cities Are Vastly Undercounting Emissions, Researchers Find<\/a>.\u201d The study compares self-reported emission inventories published by 48 major U.S. cities to estimates from a state-of-the-art emissions information system.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dierdra Bycura<\/strong>, chair of the Department of Health Sciences; <strong>Anthony C. Santos<\/strong>, a graduate student in the Department of Health Sciences; <strong>Arron Shiffer<\/strong>, a graduate student in the Department of Biological Sciences; <strong>Shari Kyman<\/strong> with the Pathogen and Microbiome Institute;\u00a0<strong>Kyle Winfree<\/strong>, associate director of the School of Informatics, Computing, and Cyber Systems; \u00a0<strong>Jay Sutliffe<\/strong>, professor of in the Department of Health Sciences; <strong>Talima Pearson<\/strong>, associate research professor in the Department of Biological Sciences; <strong>Derek Sonderegger<\/strong>, associate professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics; <strong>Emily Cope<\/strong>, assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, and <strong>Greg Caporaso<\/strong>, associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences authored \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2075-4663\/9\/2\/14\">Impact of Different Exercise Modalities on the Human Gut Microbiome<\/a>\u201d in Sports. The article examined changes to the human gut microbiome resulting from an eight-week intervention of cardiorespiratory exercise or resistance training exercise.<\/li>\n<li>The Department of Astronomy and Planetary Science faculty had several accomplishments.\n<ul>\n<li>Assistant professor <strong>Tyler Robinson<\/strong> co-authored the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2101.07378\">Probing the capability of future direct imaging missions to spectrally constrain the frequency of Earth-like planets<\/a>\u201d published in Earth and Planetary Astrophysics. The study explores the critical question in astrobiology of whether exoEarth candidates are Earth-like in that they originate life that progressively oxygenates their atmospheres similarly to Earth.<\/li>\n<li>Assistant professor <strong>Cristina Thomas<\/strong> and interim chair <strong>David Trilling<\/strong> co-authored the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2101.08822\">Space Weathering within C-Complex Main Belt Asteroid Families<\/a>\u201d published in Earth and Planetary Astrophysics. The study examines color as a function of size for C-complex families in the main asteroid belt to improve understanding of space weathering of carbonaceous materials and found two distinct spectral slope trends.<\/li>\n<li>Associate professor <strong>Joshua Emery<\/strong> co-authored the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2101.10886\">The Lifecycle of Hollows on Mercury: An Evaluation of Candidate Volatile Phases and a Novel Model of Formation<\/a>\u201d published in Earth and Planetary Astrophysics.
