NCTQ researches, provides information and proposes new changes to restore the teaching profession to strong health so that all teachers will have the conditions they need to thrive.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Center for Science Teaching and Learning<\/strong>, alongside the University of Washington\u2019s Northwest Earth and Space Sciences Pipeline, restructured the NASA Robotics Student Challenge because of COVID-19. The <a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/cstl\/cienega-hs-wins-roads-on-mars-challenge\/\">Rover Observation and Drone Survey on Mars Student Challenge<\/a> was originally planned to host up to 48 robotics teams in grades 3-12 from throughout the state, but was restructured so seven teams could participate in a socially distanced way.<\/li>\n<li>Chief Information Officer<strong> Steven Burrell<\/strong> and psychology professor <strong>Michelle Miller<\/strong> were listed on Ed Tech\u2019s list, \u201cThe 2020 Dean\u2019s List: 30 Higher Ed IT Influencers Worth a Follow.\u201d Ed Tech is one of the leading tech magazines and notes top IT leaders, bloggers, podcasters and social media personalities that its viewers should follow.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jennifer Mitchell<\/strong>, senior lecturer emerita, was featured on WalletHub\u2019s page, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/wallethub.com\/cheap-car-insurance\/arizona?experts=Jennifer_M._Mitchell\">Cheap Car Insurance in Arizona<\/a>.\u201d Mitchell shares her insights on the effect that COVID-19 has on car sales, the use of celebrity endorsers and the intentions of insurance companies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Andrea Gonz\u00e1lez Sotelo<\/strong>, associate director of GEAR UP, was recognized by <a href=\"https:\/\/azcapitoltimes.com\/news\/2020\/10\/28\/congratulations-to-the-2020-breakdown-breakouts\/?utm_term=Congratulations%20to%20the%202020%20Breakdown%20Breakouts%21&amp;utm_campaign=Kelly%20sues%20website%20over%20claim%20he%20dressed%20as%20Hitler%20at%20%2785%20party&amp;utm_content=email&amp;utm_source=Act-On+Software&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;cm_mmc=Act-On%20Software-_-email-_-Kelly%20sues%20website%20over%20claim%20he%20dressed%20as%20Hitler%20at%20%2785%20party-_-Congratulations%20to%20the%202020%20Breakdown%20Breakouts%21\">Arizona Capitol Times<\/a> as a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.azcapitoltimes.com\/acton\/rif\/22716\/s-10fe-2010\/-\/l-0013:5b31\/q-0015\/showPreparedMessage?utm_term=Click%20here&amp;utm_campaign=Here%20they%20are%2C%20the%202020%20Breakdown%20Breakouts%20winners%21&amp;utm_content=email&amp;utm_source=Act-On+Software&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;cm_mmc=Act-On%20Software-_-email-_-Here%20they%20are%2C%20the%202020%20Breakdown%20Breakouts%20winners%21-_-Click%20here&amp;sid=TV2:ii8akRVii\">2020 Breakdown Breakout honoree<\/a>. This honor recognizes individuals under 40 years of age who routinely take on the most challenging issues, establishing their credentials through hard work and persistence with an independent spirit that defines the American Southwest.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Miguel Jos<\/strong><strong>\u00e9-Yacaman<\/strong>, professor in the Department of Applied Physics and Materials Science, co-authored the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1387181120307071?via%3Dihub\">Ag nanoparticles in A4 zeolite as efficient catalysts for the 4-nitrophenol reduction<\/a>\u201d published in Microporous and Mesoporous Materials. The study revealed that the selection in the conditions applied for microwave-assisted synthesis and the components of the catalyst (Ag and A4 zeolite) offers an ultra-fast method for the synthesis of highly active catalysts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dian Squire<\/strong>, assistant professor of educational psychology, was recognized as a <a href=\"http:\/\/foundation.myacpa.org\/diamond-honoree\/honorees\/\">Diamond Honoree<\/a> by the American College Personnel Association Foundation.\u00a0The program was established in 1999 and honors those who care about students and the research, scholarship and programs that promote student development and success.<\/li>\n<li>Associate clinical professor of occupational therapy <strong>Amy Armstrong-Heimsoth<\/strong> and her student research team of <strong>Emily Farber<\/strong>, <strong>Kalie Plesher<\/strong> and <strong>Brooke Tubbs<\/strong> were awarded the Arizona Occupational Therapy Association grant for the project, \u201cMeasuring the effects of an occupational therapy life skills curriculum for youth formerly in the foster care system.\u201d The grant will fund their work in developing a life skills program that will improve independent living for youth transitioning out of the foster care system.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nancy Wonders<\/strong>, professor of criminology and criminal justice, presented the paper, \u201cCoronavirus Capitalism and Migration: Tipping Scales of Power\u201d at the annual meeting of the European Society of Criminology. She also was invited to speak for the international webinar, \u201cCritical Criminology and Public Policy\u201d hosted by La Primera Universidad de Posgrado del Estado in Quito, Ecuador.<\/li>\n<li>Lecturer of psychological sciences <strong>Jason Whetten<\/strong> was recognized by Northern Arizona University\u2019s Alpha Lambda Delta chapter as the most influential faculty member for the 2019-20 school year. He was selected based on his meaningful contributions to the education and successes of members and because his interactions with students reflect the core values of the honor society: knowledge, truth and honor.<\/li>\n<li>Assistant research professor <strong>Sara Souther<\/strong> has partnered with Apache Elders and the U.S. Forest Service to help restore Emory Oak groves. Souther along with NAU alumni <strong>Andrew Stevenson<\/strong> is featured in a video about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=00BWCCSlO9Q&amp;feature=youtu.be\">Emory Oak Collaborative Tribal Restoration Initiative<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Michael McCarthy<\/strong>, associate professor of social work, published several papers over the course of four months. See below for the latest publications.\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/1049731520961172\">Feasibility of the <em>Hand in Hand<\/em> Relationship Intervention for Stroke Survivor\u2014Caregiver Dyads: A Randomized Trial<\/a>\u201d (Research on Social Work Practice)<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/nur.22075\">Adapting the telephone assessment and skill-building kit to the telehealth technology preferences of stroke family caregivers<\/a>\u201d\u00a0(Research in Nursing and Health)<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ppar\/article\/30\/4\/178\/5901344\">Addressing the Needs of Rural Caregivers of Individuals with Alzheimer\u2019s Disease and Related Dementias During and Beyond Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)<\/a>\u201d\u00a0(Public Policy &amp; Aging Report)<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/10749357.2020.1806435?journalCode=ytsr20&amp;\">A scoping review of the PhotoVoice for people with post-stroke aphasia<\/a>\u201d (Topics in Stroke Rehabilitation)<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.asha.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1044\/2020_PERSP-20-00028\">Yoga as Therapy for People with Aphasia<\/a>\u201d\u00a0(SIG 2 Neurogenic Communication Disorders)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The School of Informatics, Computing, and Cyber Systems (SICCS) has had several notable successes and accomplishments.\n<ul>\n<li>Assistant professor <strong>Morgan Vigil-Hayes<\/strong> was awarded an NSF grant for the project titled, \u201cSCC-PG: SUNRISE: Using Mobile Games in Rural Tribal Communities to Promote Social and Emotional Resilience in Youth.\u201d The grant totals $149,896 and runs from Oct. 1 to Spet. 30, 2021.<\/li>\n<li>Assistant professor <strong>Crystal Hepp<\/strong> was awarded a $39,877 grant under the Technology and Research Initiative Research Fund (TRIF) Research Equipment Acquisition Program for the project titled, \u201c785nm Portable Raman Spectrometer Hyper-Nova-785-BIDD.\u201d The TRIF fund is a program to stimulate Arizona\u2019s knowledge-based economy by supporting innovation, entrepreneurship, research and development and workforce development, as well as the infrastructure needed to advance these areas.<\/li>\n<li>Assistant professor <strong>Michael Gowanlock<\/strong> co-authored the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s41019-020-00145-x\">Heterogeneous CPU-GPU Epsilon Grid Joins: Static and Dynamic Work Partitioning Strategies<\/a>\u201d published in Data Science and Engineering. The study proposes Heterogeneous Epsilon Grid Joins (HEGJOIN), a heterogeneous CPU-GPU distance similarity join algorithm, and an individual model for two static work partitioning strategies to perform the distribution of the work between the processors.<\/li>\n<li>Associate professor <strong>Fatemeh Afghah<\/strong> co-authored the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1389128620312275?via%3Dihub\">A survey on physical unclonable function (PUF)-based security solutions for Internet of Things<\/a>\u201d published in Computer Networks. The article presents a survey and review of the security challenges of emerging IoT networks and discusses some of the attacks and their countermeasures based on different domains in the IoT networks.<\/li>\n<li>Director and professor <strong>Benjamin Ruddell<\/strong> and assistant research professor <strong>Richard Rushforth<\/strong> co-authored the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.researchsquare.com\/files\/rs-91699\/v1_stamped.pdf\">Supply chain diversity buffers cities against food shocks<\/a>\u201d published in ResearchSquare.com. The study shows that boosting a city\u2019s food supply chain diversity increases the resistance of a city to food shocks of mild to moderate severity up to 15 percent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The Department of Astronomy and Planetary Science had several accomplishments and participants in the Division for Planetary Science meeting (DPS).\n<ul>\n<li>Faculty and grad students donated tents, sleeping bags, warm clothing and health essentials to Kinlani Mutual Aid. Donations were collected in response to the threat of COVID-19 and will be distributed to those most vulnerable in the Flagstaff community. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taalahooghan.org\/kinlani-flagstaff-mutual-aid\/\">Visit Kinlani\/Flagstaff Mutual Aid website to contribute.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Interim Chair <strong>David Trilling<\/strong> gave an invited talk titled, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/owncloud.lal.in2p3.fr\/index.php\/s\/miqSTEXeAu4xRF6#pdfviewer\">Solar System Notification Alert Processing System (SNAPS)<\/a>\u201d at the virtual Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) enabling science 2020 broker workshop. The workshop is the first of two and was meant to establish baselines about the LSST project and alert stream status, basic requirements of the science collaborations and expected outcomes and the status of proposed brokers.<\/li>\n<li>Participating in the DPS meeting put on by the American Astronomical Society were faculty members Trilling, <strong>Joshua Emery<\/strong>, <strong>Cristina Thomas<\/strong>, <strong>Mark Loeffler<\/strong>, <strong>Chad Trujillo<\/strong> and <strong>Stephen Tegler<\/strong>; Lowell Observatory astronomers Jennifer Hanley, Michael Mommert and Will Grundy; students <strong>Colin Chandler<\/strong>, <strong>Maggie McAdam<\/strong>, <strong>Annika Gustafsson<\/strong>, <strong>Patrick Tribbett<\/strong>, <strong>Ryder Strauss<\/strong>, <strong>Samuel Navarro Meza<\/strong>, <strong>Will Oldroyd<\/strong>, <strong>Audrey Martin<\/strong>, <strong>Anna Engle<\/strong>, <strong>Nick Moscovitz <\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Andy Lopez-Oquendo<\/strong>; and\u00a0alumni <strong>Jay Kueny<\/strong>, <strong>Maxim Devgele<\/strong>, <strong>Lauren McGraw<\/strong> and <strong>Beau Prince<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/in-the-spotlight-nov-6-2020\/\">Kudos to these faculty, staff and programs Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?
