The article describes an effort to strengthen early childhood teaching in schools on the Navajo Nation by situating work to support teachers in the development of academically rigorous and culturally responsive curriculum.<\/li>\n<li><strong>United Sound<\/strong>, a program where NAU music education students teach adults from Flagstaff with special needs how to play a musical instrument, donated items and created goodie bags to handout to them in a socially distant environment. They came to campus once a week before the pandemic to interact with students and played with them at football games. The students have continued teaching using virtual music videos.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>NAU Votes Coalition<\/strong>, a campus-wide effort spearheaded by students and faculty from the civic engagement minor to increase voter registration, education and election participation, has provided multiple new avenues for students to register to vote. The Arizona Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) reported that <a href=\"https:\/\/arizonastudentvote.org\/\">org<\/a> (where NAU students are directed) received 385 voter registrations from NAU, the most of any PIRG chapter in the country so far.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/student-spotlight-sept-11-2020\/\">Kudos to these students Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?
