\nHonor the life and civil rights work of Martin Luther King Jr. during Northern Arizona University’s annual MLK march and celebration Monday, Jan. 16.<\/p>\n

While the university will be closed on Monday in observance of the holiday, a number of activities have been planned through NAU\u2019s Civic Service Institute to encourage volunteerism and community involvement.<\/p>\n

A schedule of events is available\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Highlights include a march that will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the University Union by the Office of Student Life. Participants will head south on the pedway to the du Bois Center Ballroom for a student-run program featuring a volunteer fair, awards, speeches, voter registration and more.<\/p>\n

Commemorative events honoring MLK continue on Tuesday, Jan. 17, with a play called\u00a0The Meeting<\/em>\u00a0that begins at 7 p.m. in the du Bois Center Ballroom. The play depicts a fictional debate between King and Malcom X about the era\u2019s civil rights struggle. A 15-minute question-and-answer session with the actors will follow.<\/p>\n

A philosophy discussion will take place after the play at 8 p.m. in SBS West (building 70), room 103, where participants will be invited to address topics related to King\u2019s nonviolent approach, issues raised during the play, and why they are still relevant.<\/p>\n
