These included a presentation at the fourth International Conference on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development of the Greater Mekong Sub-region, Khon Kaen, Thailand, and seminars at Khon Kaen University, the Centre for International Forestry Research in Bogor, Indonesia, and the University of Mataram on Lombok Island, Indonesia.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jim Wilce<\/strong>, professor of anthropology, recently was in Bonn, Germany, as part of a 12-member international panel reviewing three proposals for &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dfg.de\/en\/research_funding\/programmes\/excellence_initiative\/\">Excellence Initiative<\/a>&#8221; funding. The Excellence Initiative is the German Research Council&#8217;s program to boost already-elite German research programs to world-class status. The proposals, coming from three German research centers, requested a total of 35 million euros over a five-year period.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jason Hess<\/strong>, associate professor of art, published the article \u201cElusive Surfaces\u201d in the current issue of\u00a0<em>The Log Book<\/em>, an international publication on wood firing and wood-fired ceramics. Hess\u2019s article discusses the wood-fired soda glaze and includes five images of his work. His work also is featured on the magazine cover available\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/homepage.eircom.net\/~thelogbook\/\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alfonso Dominguez<\/strong>, an environmental sciences major at NAU-Yuma, has been selected by the Polaris Project for a month-long field expedition to the Siberian Arctic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/in-the-spotlight-feb-10-2012\/\">Kudos to these faculty, staff and students Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?
