{"id":60160,"date":"2020-07-07T10:21:21","date_gmt":"2020-07-07T17:21:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=60160"},"modified":"2020-07-07T10:21:21","modified_gmt":"2020-07-07T17:21:21","slug":"flinn-foundation-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/flinn-foundation-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Two NAU research centers receive Flinn Foundation funding to support COVID-19 response"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Scientists at two Northern Arizona University research centers\u2014the <a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/pmi\/\">Pathogen and Microbiome Institute<\/a> (PMI) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/cher\/\">Center for Health Equity Research<\/a> (CHER)\u2014recently received grants totaling $175,000 from the <a href=\"https:\/\/flinn.org\/flinn-foundation-extends-grantmaking-response-to-covid-19-in-arizona-3\/\">Flinn Foundation<\/a> in support of projects directed at responding to the COVID-19 threat.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers in PMI are internationally recognized for their expertise in the genomic mechanisms of disease\u2014and for the capacity to safely study pathogens ranging from anthrax and plague to West Nile virus and valley fever. In April, under the leadership of executive director and Regents\u2019 Professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/profile.directory.nau.edu\/person\/keim\"><strong>Paul Keim<\/strong><\/a>, PMI launched the new COVID-19 Testing Service Center (CTSC), which will use PMI\u2019s Biosafety Level 3 facilities to test and evaluate the effectiveness of proposed vaccines and treatments for the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Several private companies and academic teams trying to develop therapeutics\u2014but lacking the stringently regulated laboratory infrastructure for testing with COVID-19 samples\u2014have already consulted with PMI to move their candidate compounds into initial screening for efficacy at NAU, including <a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/nau-research\/covid19-vaccine-collaboration\/\">Vault Pharma<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/nau-research\/pathogen-and-microbiome-institute\/\">Oncology Venture<\/a>. Flinn Foundation funding will accelerate the CTSC\u2019s ramp-up to begin this work, led by NAU assistant professor <strong>C. Todd French<\/strong>, a specialist in pathogen-virulence mechanisms. The grant also will support the work of associate professor <strong>Bridget Barker<\/strong> of PMI.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60162\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60162\" style=\"width: 266px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Julie-Baldwin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-60162 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Julie-Baldwin.jpg\" alt=\"Julie Baldwin\" width=\"266\" height=\"249\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-60162\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Regents&#8217; Professor Julie Baldwin<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>CHER, NAU\u2019s cross-disciplinary\u00a0research center devoted to achieving health equity through research in fields including public health, epidemiology and biostatistics, is responding to COVID-19 through disease-intervention modeling. CHER director and Regents\u2019 Professor\u00a0<strong>Julie Baldwin<\/strong> and <strong>Joe Mihaljevic<\/strong>, assistant professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/school-of-informatics-computing-and-cyber-systems\/\">School of Informatics, Computing, and Cyber Systems<\/a> (SICCS), are leading a project to model the spread of COVID-19 in rural settings like northern Arizona and the Colorado Plateau, which have much different characteristics than the urban centers of outbreak informing most existing models. The team also consists of CHER associate professor <strong>Samantha Sabo<\/strong>, assistant professor <strong>Ricky Camplain<\/strong> and senior program coordinator <strong>Carly Camplain<\/strong>, as well as professor <strong>Eck<\/strong> <strong>Doerry<\/strong> of SICCS.<\/p>\n<p>Flinn Foundation funding will support model prototyping in the Flagstaff area that incorporates data on current behaviors and interventions and assesses the impact of a variety of potential future interventions and changes in the public\u2019s behavior.
