{"id":59375,"date":"2020-04-09T15:13:43","date_gmt":"2020-04-09T22:13:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=59375"},"modified":"2020-04-09T15:18:24","modified_gmt":"2020-04-09T22:18:24","slug":"in-the-spotlight-april-10-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/in-the-spotlight-april-10-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"In the Spotlight: April 10, 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kudos to these faculty, staff and programs<\/p>\n<p>Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?<\/p>\n<p>E-mail your announcements to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:Inside@nau.edu\">Inside@nau.edu<\/a>, or use our\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/news-tip\/\">online submission form<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bj\u00f6rn Krondorfer<\/strong>, director of the Martin-Springer Institute, presented several talks and workshops in Johannesburg, South Africa, for the opening of \u201cThrough the Eyes of Youth: Life and Death in the Bedzin Ghetto.\u201d The exhibit was created by NAU student-faculty teams in 2013-14 and will be displayed in <a href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/exhibit-travels-the-world\/#.Xo9Mn8hKjIU\">Durban and Cape Town<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Professor of English <strong>Donelle Ruwe<\/strong> and professor of music history <strong>James Leve<\/strong> edited and published, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/Children-Childhood-and-Musical-Theater-1st-Edition\/Ruwe-Leve\/p\/book\/9781472475336\">Children, Childhood, and Musical Theater<\/a>,\u201d with Routledge. The book is a collection of papers written by scholars who examine how childhood musicals tap into adult nostalgia for childhood while appealing to the needs and consumer potential of the child. Ruwe and Leve also wrote articles in the book.\n<ul>\n<li>Ruwe\u2019s article, \u201cGhetto Chic: Utopianism and the Authentic Child in <em>The Me Nobody Knows<\/em> (1970),\u201d shows how the award-winning show\u2014the first Broadway musical based on writings of inner-city children\u2014both celebrates and exploits child writers and child performers.<\/li>\n<li>Leve\u2019s article, \u201cLittle Girls, Big Voices: <em>Annie<\/em>,\u201d explores the rise of the girl diva, the use of chest voice and the careers of different actresses who played Annie.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kyoungmee \u201cKate\u201d Byun<\/strong>, assistant professor of interior design, received the 2020 Michael Brill Grant for Urban Communication, Design, and Human Behavior presented by the Environmental Design Research Association. Her project was titled, \u201cExploration of Human Perception towards Physical Settings of an Exhibition as Narrative Environment: A Study using Virtual Reality (VR).\u201d\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Jaewook Lee<\/strong>, assistant professor of art, published a review of Byun\u2019s work titled, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tk-21.com\/TK-21-LaRevue-no105?lang=fr#Our-World-Our-Say-Exhibition-1\">Our World Our Say: Understand HIV Risk and Resilience Among Adolescents who have been orphaned by HIV\/AIDS in Hai Phong, Vietnam<\/a>,\u201d in the journal TK-21. Lee\u2019s own work, a multimedia installation titled, \u201cTreaty of rhythm, color and birdsong,\u201d is featured on the <a href=\"http:\/\/proyectosaco.cl\/artista-surcoreano-fusionara-el-canto-de-los-pajaros-y-la-neurociencia-en-la-proxima-edicion-de-saco\/\">SACO Contemporary Art Festival website<\/a>. His work explores the relationship between the human brain and birdsong.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Frances Julia Riemer<\/strong>, professor of educational leadership, edited, \u201cFront and Back Stage of Tourism Performance,\u201d which Routledge published. The book examines the anthropology of tourism and how dream destinations are co-constructed by the tourist industry, state development policies and community negotiations, framed by modernity\u2019s new global cultural economy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ana Varela-Lago<\/strong>, senior lecturer of history, published the article, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/muse.jhu.edu\/article\/751497\/summary\">Translating Spain to the United States during the Cuban War of Independence: Mary J. Serrano and the Associated Cuban Press<\/a>,\u201d in the journal Hispania. The article examines the life and work of translator Mary J.
