{"id":57625,"date":"2019-10-30T16:10:58","date_gmt":"2019-10-30T23:10:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=57625"},"modified":"2019-11-01T09:04:40","modified_gmt":"2019-11-01T16:04:40","slug":"native-american-heritage-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/native-american-heritage-month\/","title":{"rendered":"NAU celebrates Native American Heritage Month"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oct. 30, 2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">November is Native American Heritage Month, and with Northern Arizona University being located near the Navajo Nation\u00ad\u2014one of the country\u2019s largest Native American reservations\u2014 and serving students from more than 110 tribal nations throughout the country, Native American Heritage Month is a special time on the Flagstaff Mountain campus. Each year, NAU offers a variety of events to help students, staff and faculty celebrate and foster awareness of Indigenous cultures and contributions. Events during the month are dedicated to commemorating Native American, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian heritage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the year, the Office of Indigenous Student Success provides individualized support to&nbsp;Native American,&nbsp;Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, First Nation and Aboriginal&nbsp;students who have found their new home at NAU. They partner with the Native American Cultural Center (NACC) to offer support for Indigenous students and create a welcoming environment to help students succeed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To learn more about Native American heritage, join NAU for a month of celebration. Learn about how wool has been used in tribes across America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>First Gen Native Voices Event<\/strong>, 5 p.m. Nov. 4. Join a panel of first-generation students who will discuss their experiences in a university setting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Resources for Success Fair<\/strong>, 4 p.m. Nov. 7. Departments that offer resources to students will be in attendance to explain how their services can be utilized.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Stew Fest<\/strong>, 1 p.m. Nov. 8. The annual Stew Fest is open to all students to enjoy a hot meal.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Native American Heritage Football game<\/strong>, 2 p.m. Nov. 9 at the J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome.\u00a0Come out and support the Lumberjacks as they take on Sacramento State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Native Agents of Change featuring James Grijalva<\/strong>, 5:30 p.m. Nov. 12<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Celebrating Food of Native Peoples<\/strong>, 4 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Hot Spot. Head to the Hot Spot inside the Student Union to chow down on native foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Indigenizing the Academy featuring Applied Indigenous Studies Faculty<\/strong>, 5:30 p.m. Nov. 13.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Native American and Indigenous Student Forum<\/strong>, 5:30 p.m. Nov. 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fresh Fruit Friday,&nbsp;<\/strong>Noon Nov. 15. The Indigi-Jacks program will offer fresh fruit to those in attendance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Miss Indigenous NAU Pageant<\/strong>, 6 p.m. Nov. 15 at Ashurst Hall. The annual Miss Indigenous NAU Pageant showcases the culture of the Indigenous women at NAU. Watch as this year\u2019s winner is crowned.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Decolonize Your Diet Sessions<\/strong>, Noon Nov. 18.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Alumni Professional Speaker Series<\/strong>, 4:30 p.m. Nov. 18.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Loving Our Sisters Self Care Event<\/strong>, 4 p.m. Nov. 20. This all-inclusive event is designed to spark conversation about the lost and missing Indigenous women throughout the county.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Student Indigenous Psychology Speaker Series<\/strong>, 6 p.m. Nov. 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Powwow Sweat Workouts<\/strong>, Noon Nov. 22.
