{"id":56985,"date":"2019-09-12T16:25:58","date_gmt":"2019-09-12T23:25:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=56985"},"modified":"2019-09-12T16:26:00","modified_gmt":"2019-09-12T23:26:00","slug":"juvenile-justice-system-roundtable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/juvenile-justice-system-roundtable\/","title":{"rendered":"NAU to host national roundtable on the juvenile justice system on Sept. 26"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sept. 12, 2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of\nthe 850,000 youth in the U.S. juvenile justice system, youth of color account\nfor about 68 percent, according to the Children\u2019s Defense Fund\u2014numbers that a\nnational gathering of juvenile justice experts hopes to eliminate in the\nfuture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nCenter for Health Equity Research (CHER) at Northern Arizona University is partnering\nwith the Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity of the National Academies\nof Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) and The NARBHA Institute to host\na one-day event on Sept. 26 entitled The Consequences of Juvenile Justice\nSystem Involvement on the Health and Well-Being of Adolescents, Families, and\nCommunities of Color,to beheld at the High Country Conference\nCenter in Flagstaff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This\nworkshop is the last in a series of three NASEM Roundtable on Health Equity events;\nthe first focused on incarceration as a structural determinant of health, and\nthe second examined how race, ethnicity, drug control laws and policies\nintersect within the criminal justice system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nationally recognized experts in\njustice and health, including Scott Bales, executive director,\nInstitute for the Advancement of the American Legal System (IAALS) of Denver\nand former Arizona chief justice (ret.), will be exploring the issue. CHER\ndirector <strong>Julie Baldwin<\/strong> and Dr. Mark Carroll, chief health officer and vice\npresident of discovery and development at The NARBHA Institute, will help moderate\nthe workshop, along with other members of the NASEM Roundtable on the Promotion\nof Health Equity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through\na series of four panel sessions, attendees will examine strategies to transform\njuvenile justice involvement.
