{"id":56942,"date":"2019-09-11T15:48:43","date_gmt":"2019-09-11T22:48:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=56942"},"modified":"2019-09-13T08:23:07","modified_gmt":"2019-09-13T15:23:07","slug":"latinx-heritage-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/latinx-heritage-month\/","title":{"rendered":"NAU celebrates Latinx Heritage Month"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sept. 11, 2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Northern Arizona University is celebrating Latinx Heritage\nMonth with a variety of events hosted by NAU\u2019s Office of Inclusion. The\ntradition of Latinx Heritage Month started in 1968 and runs Sept. 15 to Oct.\n15. Historically, the month recognizes the days when several Latin American\ncountries gained independence and celebrates the unique traditions, cultures\nand contributions from these countries.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NAU\u2019s celebration begins with an ice cream social at the\nUnion Fieldhouse. Students and faculty can mix and mingle in a casual\natmosphere while sharing stories and personal anecdotes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen planning, we try to have a balance of educational and\nfun events. Several of the events have been planned by student organizations,\u201d\nsaid <strong>Rivkah Gamble<\/strong>, the senior administrative assistant with the Office\nof Inclusion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Latinx Student Union, Black Student Union, Daleth Phi Aleph and Hermanas United for Change have all been key student organizations in this year\u2019s planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The month highlights two talks: \u201cDiversity Dialogues: Mexican and Latina\/o Immigration, Migration, and Labor\u201d at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 25, followed by \u201cQueer Migration and Border Crisis\u201d given by NAU\u2019s own <strong>Jessi Quizar<\/strong>, professor of ethnic studies, at 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 1 in the IMQ Center. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Flagstaff community is encouraged to take part in events and attend La Fiesta, where salsa lessons will be offered before an evening of socializing.
