Author and activist Terry Tempest Williams will give a free public\nlecture at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Prochnow Auditorium, as part of\nthe 15th<\/sup> Biennial Conference of Science and Management for the\nColorado Plateau and Southwest Region. The event is sponsored by BYU\u2019s Charles\nRedd Center for Western Studies, NAU\u2019s Office of the President and NAU\u2019s College\nof Arts and Letters humanities department. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Known as \u201ca citizen writer\u201d\u2014a writer who speaks out eloquently on behalf\nof an ethical stance toward life\u2014Williams has consistently shown how\nenvironmental issues are social issues that ultimately become matters of\njustice. She has testified before Congress on women\u2019s health issues, been a\nguest at the White House, camped in the remote regions of Utah and Alaska\nwildernesses and worked as a \u201cbarefoot artist\u201d in Rwanda. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Williams is the author of several environmental literature classics,\nincluding: \u201cRefuge: An Unnatural History of Family and Place;\u201d \u201cAn Unspoken\nHunger: Stories from the Field;\u201d \u201cDesert Quartet;\u201d \u201cLeap;\u201d \u201cRed: Passion and\nPatience in the Desert;\u201d \u201cThe Open Space of Democracy;\u201d and \u201cFinding Beauty in\na Broken World.\u201d Her newest book, \u201cErosion: Essays of Undoing,\u201d will be\npublished in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Biennial Conference,\nwhich will take place Sept 9-12 at the High Country Conference Center, will bring\ntogether resource managers and research scientists, including students, to\nshare information and learn from one another to foster the common goal of\nimproving the management of the region\u2019s incomparable natural and cultural\nresources.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
