Each spring, Northern Arizona University students have the opportunity to develop skills and experience the legislative process firsthand while working alongside professionals at the state capitol through the Arizona State Legislative Internship Program<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Interns practice\nresearch, writing and public speaking, while participating in the democratic\nprocess during the legislative session. The program is open to students of all\nmajors, and previous knowledge of the legislative process is not required to\napply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Faculty and staff are\nencouraged to remind students about this opportunity as the application\ndeadlines for Spring 2020 are quickly approaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Interns are selected for\npositions with the Arizona State Senate, the Arizona State House of\nRepresentatives, the Arizona State Governor\u2019s Office and the Arizona State\nSupreme Court. Selected broadcast<\/strong><\/a> interns join the Arizona Capitol\nTelevision team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Those selected for the\nlegislative and broadcast internships work full-time in Phoenix during the\nlegislative session from January through May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In addition to the\nexperience, interns receive a stipend of $5,000, a tuition or fee waiver and\nearn 12 hours of undergraduate upper division credit or 9 hours of graduate\ncredit upon successful completion of the internship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cIn week one, 13 interns\nand myself were seated in a white room and given more information than I\nexpected to learn throughout the semester. I imagined grabbing coffee for\nhigher-ups, making copies and not much else. I could not have been more\nmistaken,\u201d said Adrienne Austill<\/strong>, international\naffairs major and former House of Representatives intern. \u201cThis internship\nallowed me to gain skills such as public speaking, research, writing, patience\nand a true understanding of the legislative branch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Descriptions of the\ndifferent positions within each office or agency as well as a link to the\napplication can be found online<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Application materials\nfor the legislative and broadcast internships must be submitted via Handshake<\/strong><\/a>. This includes a completed application, personal statement,\nunofficial transcript, two signed letters of recommendation and a current\nresume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Legislative internship applications are due by 5 p.m. Sept. 25. Broadcast internship applications for Arizona Capitol Television are due mid-October.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
