Accredited programs were judged based on quality of program, types of classes offered, quality of business education and faculty strength, awards and reputation. <\/li><\/ul><ul><li>BachelorsDegreeCenter.org included NAU on its list of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bachelorsdegreecenter.org\/best-online-fire-science-degree\/\">25 Best Online Fire Science Degree Bachelor\u2019s Programs<\/a> for 2019. Programs were judged on cost, employment rate, graduation rate, salary potential and student reviews. NAU was highlighted for its flexibility with transfer credits, letting students work at their own pace and having a focus on leadership within emergency services. <\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Astronomy and planetary sciences chair <strong>Nadine Barlow<\/strong> made national news discussing NAU\u2019s role in space research and exploration. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/science\/nasa-moon-landing-flagstaff-lunar-history\">Fox News article<\/a>, Barlow highlighted Flagstaff\u2019s history of training astronauts for the first moon landing and NAU\u2019s current research, such as finding the best location for humans to live on the moon. <\/li><li><strong>Claire Ebert<\/strong> and <strong>Jaime Awe<\/strong> of the anthropology department were co-authors on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.journals.uchicago.edu\/doi\/pdfplus\/10.1086\/704530\">The Role of Diet in Resilience and Vulnerability to Climate Change among Early Agricultural Communities in the Maya Lowlands<\/a>\u201d published in Current Anthropology. The paper examines how diet contributed to the ancient Maya being able to endure periods of severe climatic stress, and that a maize-based diet may have made the civilization more vulnerable to drought. The study also was highlighted in the Science Daily article \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2019\/07\/190703121405.htm\">Maize-centric diet may have contributed to ancient Maya collapse<\/a>.\u201d <\/li><li>Professors of biological sciences <strong>Ted Schuur <\/strong>and <strong>Yiqi Luo<\/strong> are co-authors of a paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS). \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2019\/07\/02\/1901307116\">Responses of tundra soil microbial communities to half a decade of experimental warming at two critical depths<\/a>\u201d details a study conducted in Alaska that reveals how ongoing permafrost thaw is contributing to climate change and identifies potential biomarkers that could be important in modeling. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/global-warming-microbes-alaskan-tundra-greenhouse-gases-scientists-1448065\">Newsweek<\/a> covered the paper as well.<\/li><li>Politics and international affairs professor <strong>Eric Otenyo<\/strong> co-authored \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.openedition.org\/poldev\/3085#quotation\">Digitisation and the Disappearing Job Theory: A Role for the ILO in Africa<\/a>.\u201d The paper, published in International Development Policy, explores possible effects of digitization in three economic sectors of African economies and discusses possible outcomes as African societies become more digitized. <\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.food-management.com\/colleges-universities\/branded-coffee-cart-extends-jazzman-s-brand-nau?NL=FM-08&amp;Issue=FM-08_20190702_FM-08_780&amp;sfvc4enews=42&amp;cl=article_2&amp;utm_rid=CPG06000001160795&amp;utm_campaign=31571&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;elq2=3953171c95a9434eb980ead8847db222\">Food Management featured NAU in an article<\/a> about its new mobile cart version of Jazzman\u2019s Caf\u00e9, calling NAU \u201ca hotbed for creative concept ideas.\u201d Director of campus dining <strong>Ben Hartley <\/strong>spoke to the publication about the additional offerings of the mobile cart and how it will benefit students on campus. <\/li><li>School of Informatics, Computing, and Cyber Systems professor <strong>Scott Goetz<\/strong> is co-author of a study published July 3 in&nbsp;Science Advances. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/advances.sciencemag.org\/content\/5\/7\/eaav3223\">Global restoration opportunities in tropical rainforest landscapes<\/a>\u201d identifies \u201crestoration hotspots\u201d\u2014100 million hectares of lost lowland tropical rainforests in 15 countries across four continents\u2014that could be restored now to boost the environment, biodiversity and climate change mitigation. &#8220;Tropical forest restoration and conservation go hand in hand,&#8221; Goetz said, &#8220;and there is much international political motivation to restore and conserve forests, so we need to collectively take advantage of this opportunity as soon as possible.&#8221;<\/li><li>School of Earth and Sustainability professor <strong>Nancy Riggs<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2019-07\/gsoa-gso070219.php\">was recognized with a Distinguished Service Award<\/a> from the Geological Society of America for extensive and exceptional service to GSA in multiple capacities. Riggs will be presented with the award in September at the GSA Annual Meeting and Exposition in Phoenix. <\/li><li><strong>KNAU<\/strong> won a first place PRNDI (National Public Radio News Directors Incorporated) award for sports reporting with \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.knau.org\/post\/gear-girls-flagstaff-s-next-generation-female-mountain-bikers?fbclid=IwAR1fLuIzPFtN4uQRfeKuSu3E4Qz0llHfwQsz-4Uxx-iCFzEWnIhBY-LgXdk\">Gear Girls: Flagstaff\u2019s Next Gen Female Mountain Bikers<\/a>.\u201d The segment highlights some of the region\u2019s pioneering female mountain bikers mentoring the next generation of girls hitting the trails. The story was reported by former Morning Edition host <strong>Aaron Granillo<\/strong> and edited by <strong>Gillian Ferris<\/strong>.<\/li><li><strong>NAU Social Media <\/strong>has been recognized as a finalist in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prdaily.com\/announcing-pr-dailys-2019-digital-pr-social-media-awards-finalists\/\">PR Daily\u2019s 2019 Digital Marketing and Social Media Awards<\/a>. \u201cBuilding Community and Increasing Student Engagement Through Lumberjack Branded Gif Sticker Packs and Q&amp;A Student Takeovers\u201d is one of four finalists in the Use of Instagram Stories category, selected for its innovative, creative and well-planned approach.<\/li><li>Senior lecturer in history <strong>Ana Varela-Lago<\/strong> had a chapter published in the edited volume <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Norteam\u00e9rica-Espa\u00f1a-desencuentros-Convergences-Divergences\/dp\/1940075718\/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Varela-lago&amp;qid=1561572970&amp;s=gateway&amp;sr=8-1\">North America and Spain: A History of Convergences and Divergences.<\/a> The chapter examines how the Spanish government, through the Spanish Legation in Washington, financed the establishment of a press agency to counter the pro-Cuban narrative in the United States during the Cuban war of independence (1895-1898).<\/li><li>Criminology and criminal justice alumni <strong>Heather Foster<\/strong> and <strong>Brian Ayres<\/strong>, with professor <strong>Phoebe Morgan, <\/strong>published \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ioa.memberclicks.net\/assets\/docs\/JIOA_Articles\/IOA_06-2019_JIOA_Interpersonal_Conflicts_and_Academic_Success.pdf\">Interpersonal Conflict and Academic Success: A Campus Survey with Practical Application for Academic Ombuds<\/a>\u201d in the Journal of the International Ombudsman Association. The survey sampled 106 undergraduate students to gain a better understanding of the types of conflicts students deal with and how those conflicts affect their personal and academic lives. <\/li><li>Associate Vice President for Educational Partnerships <strong>Kathrine Yeager<\/strong> spoke to <a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/timespub\/docs\/sp_070719\/1?e=8633901\/70997656\">Scottsdale Progress<\/a> about the NAU statewide program partnership with Scottsdale Community College.
