Murrow Awards honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism. The team won Best News Series for \u201cEats and Beats.\u201d Individual awards were given to the following:<ul><li><strong>Melissa Sevigny<\/strong>, best writing: \u201cCan Beer Save the Verde River?\u201d<\/li><li><strong>Aaron Granillo<\/strong>, best sports reporting: \u201cGear Girls\u201d<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>English professor <strong>Laura Gray-Rosendale<\/strong> was awarded a silver medal in the 2019 Independent Publisher Book Awards in the Education (Commentary\/Theory) category for \u201cGetting Personal: Teaching Personal Writing in the Digital Age.\u201d The book explores how to use personal writing most effectively in various digital contexts.<\/li><li>NASA selected professor\u00a0<strong>Scott Goetz<\/strong>\u00a0of the School of Informatics, Computing, and Cyber Systems to continue in his role as science team lead for the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/above.nasa.gov\/index.html?\" target=\"_blank\">ABoVE\u00a0<\/a>(Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment) project for at least five more years. In this role, Goetz leads 680 science team members representing institutions from the U.S., Canada, Austria, Germany, The Netherlands and the UK who are involved in more than 100 projects studying the vulnerability and resilience of ecosystems and society to the changing environment.<\/li><li>A number of academic advisers presented at the Region 9 &amp; 10 National Academic Advising Association Conference in Hawaii<a href=\"#_msocom_2\"><\/a> . The annual conference promotes and supports quality academic advising in institutions of high education to enhance educational development of students. <ul><li><strong>Sarah Friedmann<\/strong> and <strong>Kelly Weston<\/strong> presented \u201cBut I\u2019ve always wanted to be a Doctor! Challenging First Year Exploratory Students to Go Beyond Their Preconceived Ideas About the Health Professions.\u201d The paper focused on their experience teaching a course geared toward exploratory students interested in health care and guiding them through the process of finding a major that fits their academic and career goals.<\/li><li><strong>Precilla Cox <\/strong>and <strong>Joseph Wright <\/strong>presented \u201cEmpowering Students Through the Power of the Internet,\u201d which provided an overview of the creation of enrollment tutorial videos and the use of social media as a platform to communicate with students. <\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Northern Arizona University<\/strong> was included in a number of rankings:<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialworkdegreeguide.com\/best-online-bachelors-degrees-public-health\/\">Social Work Degree Guide<\/a> named NAU one of the 15 Best Online Bachelor\u2019s Degrees in Public Health for 2019. Ranking factors included student satisfaction, affordability, Alumni salaries, SAT scores and retention rates. <\/li><li>College Choice named NAU as a university where students can earn one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.collegechoice.net\/rankings\/best-education-degrees\/\">Best Education Degrees<\/a>. Factors included program affordability, quality, reputation and value as well as student satisfaction.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.animationcareerreview.com\/articles\/top-graphic-design-school-programs-arizona-2019-college-rankings\">Animation Career Review<\/a> ranked NAU No. 2 on its list of Top Graphic Design School Programs in Arizona. More than 700 schools were considered for academic reputation, admission selectivity, depth and breadth of program and value. <\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>A number of faculty in the Physics and Astronomy Department had significant achievements recently:<ul><li><strong>Cristina Thomas<\/strong> was quoted in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/science\/archive\/2019\/03\/nasa-bennu-osiris-rex-asteroid\/585256\/\">article published in The Atlantic<\/a> about the NASA mission to the asteroid Bennu. <\/li><li><strong>David Trilling<\/strong> and <strong>Andrew McNeill<\/strong> were co-authors on the paper \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1903.08019\">Taxonomic Study of Asteroid Families from KMTNet-SAAO Multi-band Photometry<\/a>.\u201d The study focuses on the photometry of more than 2000 Main-belt asteroids. <\/li><li>Trilling also co-authored \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/adsabs.harvard.edu\/abs\/2019RNAAS...3c..51S\">A Software Roadmap for Solar System Science with the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/adsabs.harvard.edu\/abs\/2019ApJ...873..111I\">LSST: From Science Drivers to Reference Design and Anticipated Data Products<\/a>.\u201d<\/li><li><strong>Tyler Robinson <\/strong>co-authored \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1904.00236\">Earthshine as an Illumination Source at the Moon<\/a>.\u201d The paper explores how earthshine may allow exploration of new areas of the moon that don\u2019t receive solar illumination. <\/li><li><strong>Chad Trujillo<\/strong> co-authored \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/1538-3881\/ab0895\/meta\">A New High Perihelion Trans-Plutonian Inner Oort Cloud Object: 2015 TG387<\/a>,\u201d published in The Astronomical Journal. <\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/in-the-spotlight-april-26-2019\/\">Kudos to these faculty, staff and programs Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?
