Sommerness<\/strong>, professor of journalism, was elected to the executive board of the Western Association of Pre-Law Advisers at the quadrennial Pre-Law Advisers National Conference in Washington, D.C., this summer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table width=\"10%\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"5\" cellpadding=\"5\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_517\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-517\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-517\" title=\"wonders\" src=\"http:\/\/www2.nau.edu\/news-p\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/wonders1.jpg\" alt=\"Nancy Wonders\" width=\"250\" height=\"188\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-517\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nancy Wonders displays her recent award from the Society for the Study of Social Problems.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nancy Wonders<\/strong>, professor of criminology and criminal justice, won the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sssp1.org\/index.cfm\/m\/294\">Joseph B. Glittler Award<\/a> from the Society for the Study of Social Problems during its annual meeting last week in Denver. The award recognizes the significant scholarly achievements that society members have made in contributing to the ethical resolution of social problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Gypsy Denzine<\/strong>, professor for the College of Education, was elected vice president for fellowships and awards for the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi during its biennial convention in St. Louis. Since its creation in 1932, the fellowship program has become one of the society\u2019s most visible and financially well-supported endeavors, allocating $330,000 annually to deserving students for first-year graduate study.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Susan D. Longerbeam<\/strong>, associate professor for the Department of Educational Psychology, was named a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naspa.org\/about\/press\/120604.cfm\">Faculty Fellow<\/a> for the national student affairs association, NASPA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<table width=\"10%\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"5\" cellpadding=\"5\" align=\"right\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Noel Levitz\" src=\"http:\/\/www2.nau.edu\/news-p\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/NoelLevitz.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"231\" \/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>NAU and CCC representatives were on hand to receive the <a title=\"CCC2NAU earns national award for excellence\" href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/ccc2nau-earns-national-award-for-excellence\/\">Lee Noel and Randi Levitz Retention Excellence Award<\/a> for 2012 during the Noel-Levitz National Conference on Student Recruitment, Marketing and Retention in New Orleans in July. The award recognized the <strong>CCC2NAU program<\/strong> for its innovative practices that enhance student access to degrees. Pictured at the conference, from left, are: Lee Noel, Noel-Levitz founder; Veronica Hipolito, director of Student Support Services at CCC; <strong>Eva Putzov\u00e1<\/strong>, director for Strategic Initiatives at NAU; and Kevin Crockett, president for Noel-Levitz.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mary Tolan<\/strong>, associate professor for the School of Communication, had an article, titled &#8220;Joe Duffy Made Me Famous; Dingle Saved Me,&#8221;\u00a0published in the August\/September <em>Irish American\u00a0<\/em>magazine.Tolan also wrote a 10-minute play,<em> Store for Men<\/em>, that was selected as a winner in the\u00a0Northern Arizona Playwriting Showcase&#8217;s 10-Minute Play Contest, sponsored by\u00a0Theatrikos and NAU&#8217;s creative writing department. The play, along with six others, will be staged beginning at 8 p.m. Aug. 31, at the Doris Harper White Theater, 11 W.
