At meets last weekend, Andersen rose to No. 2 in the nation in the hammer throw, Baxter ran the fastest men\u2019s 5000-meter race in the meet\u2019s history and Taylor, in her outdoor track debut, ran the second-fastest 800-meter dash in NAU history.\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_51207\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51207\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/7RtXxX0x.jpg_large-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-51207 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/7RtXxX0x.jpg_large-copy-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Lai Yan Lam\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2018\/04\/7RtXxX0x.jpg_large-copy-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2018\/04\/7RtXxX0x.jpg_large-copy-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2018\/04\/7RtXxX0x.jpg_large-copy.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51207\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lai Yan Lam<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<li>Japanese minor <strong>Lai Yan Lam\u00a0<\/strong>won the grand prize at the 29<sup>th<\/sup>Annual Arizona Japanese Speech Contest on April 8, the first NAU student to do so. Lam received $300 in prizes, a round trip ticket to Japan and a rail pass.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jonathan Witherspoon\u00a0<\/strong>was commissioned as a second lieutenant from Air Force ROTC Detachment 027 at NAU. He is one of only a few members of the Navajo Nation to receive a commission to the U.S. Air Force.<\/li>\n<li>Nineteen NAU students have completed their internships through the NAU\/NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Research Internship Program; <strong>Darrien Benally, Amanda Binkley, Holly Buban, Nikki Cain, Tyler Dawson, Eric Duong, Sam Ebright, Emily Grams, Rachel Huchmala, Melissa Jacquez, Janus Kozdon, Kyle Lindstrom, Bray Moll, Jenna Norris, Hannah Rentschler, Tanner Rosenberg, Georgia Ross, Joseph Sweet <\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Colin Towne<\/strong>. These students presented their results at the Arizona Space Grant Consortium\u2019s 27<sup>th\u00a0<\/sup>Statewide Symposium in Tucson earlier this month.\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_51206\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51206\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/PMI-group.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-51206\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/PMI-group-300x252.jpeg\" alt=\"PMI group\" width=\"300\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2018\/04\/PMI-group-300x252.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2018\/04\/PMI-group.jpeg 663w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51206\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PMI students at the branch meeting of the American Society of Microbiologists<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<li>A contingent of students from the Pathogen and Microbiome Institute represented NAU at the Arizona-Nevada branch meeting of the American Society of Microbiologists. <strong>Rebekah Turner<\/strong>, <strong><strong>Victor\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><strong>Jimenez<\/strong>, <strong>Amalee Nunnally<\/strong>, <strong>Shelby Hutton<\/strong>, <strong>Ryan Moreno<\/strong>, and <strong>Mimi Mbegbu <\/strong>all won awards for their research.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Blanca Acosta<\/strong>, <strong>Jennifer Parada\u00a0<\/strong>and <strong>Valeriia Bogorevich\u00a0<\/strong>were the winners of the 2018 Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistantship awards.
