{"id":51129,"date":"2018-04-18T15:27:18","date_gmt":"2018-04-18T22:27:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=51129"},"modified":"2018-04-19T15:19:51","modified_gmt":"2018-04-19T22:19:51","slug":"gold-axe-may-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/gold-axe-may-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"NAU Class of 2018 President&#8217;s Prize, Gold Axe, Distinguished Senior winners honored for their service, dedication"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Northern Arizona University announced its 45 Gold Axe winners at a banquet Tuesday night, honoring the most accomplished students in the class of 2018 as well as distinguished seniors from each college.<\/p>\n<p>Out of that exceptional class of seniors, five were chosen for the President\u2019s Prize, the most prestigious award NAU offers to undergrads. The President\u2019s Prize winners are <a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/rene-coggins\/\"><strong>Ren\u00e9 Coggins<\/strong><\/a>, a triple major and member of the Honors College as well as a two-time Academic All-American athlete and a four-year starter on the women\u2019s basketball team; <strong>Brandon Corrales<\/strong>, a Flagstaff native and fitness\/wellness major who started his collegiate career at Yavapai College after suffering serious injuries as a soldier in Iraq; Honors student <a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/lauren-lecuyer-regents\/\"><strong>Lauren L\u2019Ecuyer<\/strong><\/a>, who is finishing her year as student body president just in time to become the next student regent; <a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/goldwater\/\"><strong>\u00c9tude O\u2019Neel-Judy<\/strong><\/a>, a physics student who became a Goldwater Scholar in 2017; and <strong>Celena Wallace<\/strong>, a former foster care child and creative media and film major who worked multiple jobs to put herself through college and help her family while also taking time to study abroad, be a peer mentor and volunteer in the community.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Gold-Axe-group2018-e1524176287527.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-51131 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Gold-Axe-group2018-682x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Gold Axe group shot\" width=\"227\" height=\"342\" \/><\/a>The distinguished seniors, which each college selects from its graduates, are <strong>Essence McClain<\/strong>; <strong>Ashley Sergent<\/strong>; <strong>Olivia Thomas<\/strong>; <strong>Grant Sears<\/strong>, <strong>Aria Ottmueller<\/strong>; <strong>Ren\u00e9 Coggins<\/strong> and <strong>Brittany Peterson<\/strong>. <strong>Alison Bauers<\/strong>, a nursing student, received the Joseph C. and Marie M. Rolle Award for Excellence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is extraordinary how much these students have accomplished and grown during the past four years, inside and outside the classroom,\u201d President <strong>Rita Cheng<\/strong> said. \u201cEach of their experiences is unique and special, and each of them has forged their own path. Their passion and commitment to their education and to NAU, and their service to others, is inspiring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tradition of the Gold Axe Award dates back to 1933, a year after the student body adopted the axe as the symbol for Lumberjack athletics. NAU adopted the tradition of awarding small gold axe pins to outstanding members of the student body.
