Gilbert was recognized for creating a professional development program for SI leaders based on the National Association of Colleges and Employers competencies used in the NAU common student employee appraisal form.<\/li>\n<li>Journalism professor <strong>Martin D. Sommerness\u00a0<\/strong>has been elected vice president of the Western Association of Pre-Law Advisers (WAPLA). Sommerness also presented \u201cAdvice for Advising\u2014Looking Back from the Other Side of the Admissions Process\u201d at the WAPLA Spring Training Conference in March.<\/li>\n<li>School of Hotel and Restaurant Management professor <strong>Allen Reich\u00a0<\/strong>had a paper accepted for this summer\u2019s International Council of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Educators Conference in Palm Springs. The paper, entitled \u201cImproving the Effectiveness of the Marketing Strategy Selection Process with New and Existing Graphical Models: Making sure the classroom reflects industry practices,\u201d identifies several shortcomings in marketing education caused by textbooks failing to effectively guide students through marketing practices.<\/li>\n<li>Educational leadership professor <strong>Ishmael I. Munene\u00a0<\/strong>has been awarded a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iie.org\/Programs\/Carnegie-African-Diaspora-Fellowship-Program\">Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship<\/a>\u00a0for 2018. The fellowship allows him to spend the summer at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa in Nairobi, Kenya, to work on a collaborative program for faculty development in research and community engagement.<\/li>\n<li>On April 6, School of Art instructor <strong>Barbara A. Ryan Gartin\u00a0<\/strong>presented her handmade book of woodblock prints, \u201cThe Story of Our Disappearing,\u201d at the Museum of Northern Arizona. The exhibit, entitled \u201cVoices for the Colorado Plateau,\u201d remains open through May 20 at the museum.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alan Lew<\/strong>, chair of the Department of Geography, Planning and Recreation,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>has been chosen as one of the \u201cMost Awesome Scholars in Tourism.\u201d Lew was one of the few selected from 114 nominees.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Harun Mehmedinovic<\/strong>, assistant professor of practice for School of Communication, and project partner Gavin Heffernan were recently featured in the online publication <a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2018\/04\/07\/new-york-city-stars-light-pollution\/\">Fortune<\/a> for their 3-minute short film showing what New York City would look like at night without light pollution.
