She joined KNAU in 2001 and has served as the voice of its morning show for eight years. Ferris Kohl has won several Associated Press awards and Edward R. Murrow awards for writing, feature reporting and documentary work. She will begin her new role with KNAU on Sept. 10. <strong>Janice Baker<\/strong>, who moves to Flagstaff from Las Vegas, will take over for Ferris Kohl.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chad Hamill<\/strong>, assistant professor in the School of Music, published the book <em>Songs of Power and Prayer in the Columbia Plateau.<\/em> The book explores the role of song as a transformative force in the lives of indigenous peoples of the interior Northwest. In particular, it traces a cultural, spiritual and musical encounter that began in the mid-nineteenth century when Catholic hymns introduced to the Columbia Plateau tribes were reinterpreted and re-sung as expressions of an expanding indigenous identity. Click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstpeoplesnewdirections.org\/blog\/?p=5148.\">here<\/a> to read an excerpt of the book.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Julie Kalil Schutten<\/strong>, assistant professor of communication studies and women\u2019s and gender studies, and <strong>Richard A. Rogers<\/strong>, professor of communication studies and associate faculty in women\u2019s and gender studies, with Craig O. Rich, assistant professor of communication studies at Loyola Marymount University, have had their essay, titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/03637751.2012.697633\">\u2019Don\u2019t Drop the Soap\u2019: Organizing Sexualities in the Repeal of the U.S. Military\u2019s \u2018Don\u2019t Ask, Don\u2019t Tell\u2019 Policy<\/a>,&#8221; published in the journal<em> Communication Monographs<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>High Country Conference Center<\/strong> has earned a 2011 Gold Key Award from <em>Meetings &amp; Conventions<\/em> magazine. The winners are selected by the publication\u2019s readers based on several criteria: staff attitude; quality of meeting rooms and guest services; food and beverage service; proficiency of handling reservations; availability of technical\/support equipment; and range of recreational facilities.
