A. Franke College of Business professor <strong>Theresa Bierer<\/strong> received the ATHENA Award from the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce earlier this month. The ATHENA Award is presented to local businesswomen who have achieved excellence in their field, served the community and assisted other women in attaining their goals.<\/li>\n<li>Assistant professor of anthropology\u00a0<strong>Emery Eaves<\/strong> has been approved for $50,000 in funding by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to research opioid abuse in tribal communities. The project, entitled \u201cInvolving Native Stakeholders in Pain Research Efforts,\u201d will use the funds to build partnerships with individuals and groups to improve chronic pain management and reduce opioid overuse in tribal communities.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Peter Friederici<\/strong>, director of Sustainable Communities, and <strong>Kurt Lancaster<\/strong>, School of Communications professor, have been awarded $6,000 each under the FY2019 Scholarly and Creative Activity (SCA) Awards program. Friederici was awarded based on his project \u201cCarbon Copy Literary Journal\u201d and Lancaster was awarded for his project \u201cBasic Cinematography: A Practical Guide to Visual Storytelling.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Meghan Warren<\/strong> has been invited to serve as a member of the Medicare Evidence Development &amp; Coverage Advisory Committee (MEDCAC) at the Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services (CMS). The MEDCAC provides CMS with expertise and unbiased deliberation on state-of-the-art technology and science.<\/li>\n<li>High Country News recently featured Northern Arizona University ecologist <strong>Ted Schuur<\/strong>\u2019s research on permafrost in the Denali National Park.
