To present at the REU Symposium, students must be nominated by the principal investigator of their summer research project and selected through a competitive application process. Coutts was one of the nine students chosen to present within the NSF Division of Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences.<\/li>\n<li>Two groups of civil engineering students participated in the 2017 Arizona Pavements\/Materials Conference and Student Poster Competition on Nov. 15\u00a0and 16.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Amal Abdelaziz<\/strong> and <strong>Matt Snyder <\/strong>won first place in the Graduate Student category for their research on vehicle-based sensors in assessing highway pavement conditions due to temperature changes. Seniors <strong>Kenya Avina<\/strong>, <strong>Joshua Barger<\/strong> and <strong>Mitchell Adam Geier <\/strong>were awarded first place in the Undergraduate Student category. Their research was on the use of cold-weather simulation to analyze concrete-rock interface behavior. Their research was supervised by <strong>Chun-Hsing (Jun) Ho<\/strong>, assistant professor of civil engineering.\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_49652\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49652\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Web_Kurach_AOTW.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-49652 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Web_Kurach_AOTW-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Tatiana Kurach\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2017\/11\/Web_Kurach_AOTW-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2017\/11\/Web_Kurach_AOTW-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2017\/11\/Web_Kurach_AOTW-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2017\/11\/Web_Kurach_AOTW.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-49652\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tatiana Kurach<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<li>Junior <strong>Tatiana Kurach<\/strong> was NAU\u2019s top diver this weekend, as well as the top diver in the Western Athletic Conference. Kurach was honored following her performance during NAU\u2019s Lumberjack Diving Invitational, where she was one of only two divers to place in the top seven in all three events. She has received the Diver of the Week award three times in her career.<\/li>\n<li>Fifteen Lumberjack football players were awarded with All-Big Sky Honors last week. Sophomore quarterback <strong>Case Cookus<\/strong>, senior wide receiver <strong>Elijah Marks<\/strong>, senior offensive tackle <strong>Tyler Shank<\/strong> and junior safety <strong>Wes Sutton<\/strong> were named All-Big Sky Conference First Team choices. Sophomore cornerback <strong>Kahlil Dorsey<\/strong> and junior safety <strong>Kam\u2019ron Johnson<\/strong> were selected to the All-Big Sky Second Team Defense, and senior center <strong>Blake Porter<\/strong> and junior running back <strong>Cory Young<\/strong> were honored as All-Big Sky Third Team Offensive choices. Senior defensive tackle <strong>James Walton<\/strong> was slotted as a Third Team All-Big Sky Defense selection. NAU\u2019s All-Big Sky Honorable Mention honorees included offensive tackle <strong>Cole Habib<\/strong>, running back <strong>Joe Logan<\/strong>, defensive end <strong>Clarence Smith<\/strong>, linebacker <strong>Byron Evans<\/strong>, linebacker <strong>Taylor Powell<\/strong> and cornerback <strong>Maurice Davidson<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/student-spotlight-nov-30-2017\/\">Kudos to these students Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?
