Dance battles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And not just any kind of dance battle\u2014an educational one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These, along with a variety of other unconventional learning methods like mummy wrapping (pictured below) and human knots (pictured left), were the brainchildren of the first-year student-athletes enrolled in the summer session of NAU199\u2014a class designed to help student-athletes succeed in school and in their sport.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Buck Blankenship<\/strong> instructs the course. He, along with several other faculty and staff in student-athlete development, and <strong>Jacob Dolence<\/strong>, who runs the newly opened Boundaryless Lab at NAU, came up with the idea of partnering with Killip Elementary School as a way for student-athletes to put what they\u2019ve learned in the classroom into real-life situations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe wanted to create a course where student-athletes would ask questions like, \u2018who am I as a person?\u2019 and \u2018what do I want from this college experience?\u2019\u201d Blankenship said. \u201cThe resulting project utilized design principles from\u00a0<em>Designing Your Life<\/em>, the chosen text for the course and the current\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/vpaa\/academic-transition-programs\/naureads\/\">NAU Reads book<\/a>, where student-athletes\u00a0would identify a problem that students at Killip might have, develop a solution and execute a designed plan\u2014all\u00a0while developing empathy by\u00a0basing it in the community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The problem, for example, could be that the time school ends to dinner time is critical for children with lack of opportunity, as many may use that time to play video games or watch TV instead of doing homework, playing outside or participating in group activities. The solution could be coming up with ways to use free time more effectively. Then, the student-athletes would design a plan on how to solve this problem, which might include encouraging students to read a book, learn a new skill or play some of the aforementioned educational games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/20170802_112216-e1502925913516.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-48270 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/20170802_112216-e1502925913516-663x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"303\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2017\/08\/20170802_112216-e1502925913516-663x1024.jpg 663w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2017\/08\/20170802_112216-e1502925913516-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2017\/08\/20170802_112216-e1502925913516-768x1186.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 303px) 100vw, 303px\" \/><\/a>Blankenship says there is a need for student-athletes to integrate in social groups beyond their sport, and by broadening the scope of the class to integrate community partners, it allowed them to do just that, while also addressing problems and concerns among Killip students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Soccer player <strong>Makanna Yarnell-Williams<\/strong> said she enjoyed getting out in the community and that the class served as a learning experience for everyone involved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIt was important to me because\u00a0it allowed\u00a0me to understand how to teach and understand diverse types of people,\u201d she said. \u201cI hope the kids can understand that everyone can be a good person, and everyone can go to college if they find the right resources and work hard.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">From group discussions and sharing stories about their lives to skits on how to prevent bullying and games that taught the importance of teamwork, NAU student-athletes spent two days forming friendships and mentoring the fifth-grade students, with the hope that the students would learn solutions to problems they may be facing at home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In addition to engaging with the students, the athletes met with student leaders from Killip to develop skills they could take back with them to their school and implement in their classrooms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cIn this way, there was knowledge sharing and discussion on how to use this knowledge in the future,\u201d Blankenship said. \u201cThe student-athletes inherently\u00a0knew that having fun while learning was important to keep the students engaged and interested. It was great to see what teaching styles they came up with, and as a professional educator I learned a few techniques!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For many of the student athletes involved, leaning how to teach caused a significant shift in their mindset and outlook on life\u2014many getting a lot more out of this course than what they bargained for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe student-athletes stand out wherever they are, and when they showed up at the school,\u00a0the Killip students looked up to them immediately,\u201d Blankenship said.\u00a0\u201cThis flipped the mentor\/mentee relationship, where many of the student-athletes are coached and have been the mentee in many instances. By traveling to Sunnyside and seeing the impact they had on the students, I think a lot of the athletes realized how powerful this was.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI feel empowered knowing these kids look up to me,\u201d Yarnell-Williams said. \u201cI want to exceed their expectations at all times, both on the soccer field as well as in my everyday life.
