Other times, it requires reading a story book or tutoring students in math. Whatever the task at hand may be, thanks to a recent grant of more than $1.3 million, these volunteers will continue to change lives\u2014others and their own.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Arizona University\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/sbs\/csi\/\">Civic Service Institute<\/a> has sponsored the <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/SBS\/CSI\/Programs\/Senior-Companion\/\">Senior Companion<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/SBS\/CSI\/Programs\/Foster-Grandparent\/\">Foster Grandparent<\/a>\u00a0Programs for nearly three decades\u2014providing opportunities for people 55 and over to serve throughout the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe programs are invaluable in the communities they serve because they engage volunteers to help people\u2014homebound elders and young children\u2014who are struggling and need support to thrive,\u201d said <strong>Erin Kruse<\/strong>, senior corps programs project director.<\/p>\n<p>The volunteers, who can choose from a variety of programs, dedicate at least 15 hours a week to serve people of all ages in Maricopa, Yavapai, Coconino, Navajo and Mohave counties. Last year, 242 volunteers served more than 1,100 people between the Senior Companion and Foster Grandparent Programs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf the 750 preschool through high school students whose teachers reported outcomes, 93 percent said that the students served by a Foster Grandparent volunteer improved in their academic performance and engagement,\u201d Kruse said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, recent studies have shown volunteers enjoy the health benefits of serving others\u2014decreasing anxiety, depression, loneliness and social isolation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese programs are of great benefit to everyone,\u201d Kruse said. \u201cThe Foster Grandparent Program and Senior Companion Program have long histories of creating positive change and we want to honor that legacy by continuing to engage compassionate, dedicated volunteers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Foster Grandparent grant for $752,000 and the Senior Companion grant for $611,000 from the Corporation for National and Community Service, a U.S. federal government agency that engages more than five million Americans in service initiatives, will allow the programs to grow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese programs would not exist without this funding; it is critical to their continued operation and will allow these programs to continue changing lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More information about how to become a <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/SBS\/CSI\/Programs\/Foster-Grandparent-Program-Details\/\">Foster Grandparent<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/SBS\/CSI\/Programs\/Senior-Companion-Program-Details\/\">Senior Companion<\/a> volunteer is available online.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Senior Companions\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hnCowiD_7TY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/program-receives-1-3m-grant\/\">Story and Video by Carly Banks NAU Communications Sometimes it\u2019s as simple as going on a walk.
