Northern Arizona University\u2019s Science and Health building<\/a>, one of the newest additions to the Flagstaff campus, has been deemed a Gold Leadership in\u00a0Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified building\u2014bringing the total number of LEED certified buildings on campus to 14.<\/p>\n

The impressive five-story building is located off the main pedway on north campus and features 54 faculty offices, nine interaction rooms, 10 interaction spaces, 18 research labs, eight instructional labs, five classrooms and three lecture halls with a total capacity of 440 seats.<\/p>\n

With mazes of angular staircases, walls of windows providing picturesque views of the peaks and an abundance of natural light, it\u2019s obvious this building was not solely intended to add to NAU\u2019s green building movement.<\/p>\n

\u201cAchieving LEED Gold is no simple feat,\u201d said Megan Burke<\/strong>, sustainable building coordinator. \u201cIt requires a\u00a0strong\u00a0commitment\u00a0to sustainability\u00a0and continuous collaboration from all members of the design, construction and operations teams. The Science and Health Building is special because it beautifully\u00a0illustrates\u00a0that environmental stewardship can be achieved in a fiscally responsible way,\u00a0while also\u00a0keeping\u00a0building occupant health and well-being as the top priority.\u201d<\/p>\n

NAU\u2019s commitment to continue increasing the number of LEED-certified building on campus does not stop with this recognition\u2014the\u00a0south dining hall renovation project\u00a0<\/a>and the upcoming recital hall expansion<\/a> are pursuing\u00a0LEED certifications. Cline\u00a0Library\u00a0also is pursuing LEED certification through\u00a0the existing buildings rating system.<\/p>\n

\u201cNAU’s planning, design and construction\u00a0project\u00a0managers\u00a0look for\u00a0opportunities\u00a0to include\u00a0sustainable considerations\u00a0into\u00a0even our small-scale projects,\u201d Burke said.\u00a0\u201cNAU’s Complete Design Guidelines and Technical Standards\u00a0<\/a>encourage the exploration of sustainable, energy-efficient\u00a0pathways even when projects are not pursuing LEED certification.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
