{"id":47883,"date":"2017-06-28T11:39:40","date_gmt":"2017-06-28T18:39:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/?p=47883"},"modified":"2017-06-29T10:44:23","modified_gmt":"2017-06-29T17:44:23","slug":"spotlight-june-29-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/spotlight-june-29-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"In the Spotlight: June 29, 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Kudos to these faculty and staff <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?<\/p>\n<p>E-mail your announcements to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:Inside@nau.edu\">Inside@nau.edu<\/a>, or use our\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/news-tip\/\">online submission form<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bjorn Krondorfer<\/strong>, director of the Martin-Springer Institute, and a group of NAU students researched and wrote a book about Flagstaff\u2019s Jewish community from the 1930s to the 1950s. \u201cFlagstaff Jewish Lives During and After the Holocaust and World War II\u201d was recently featured in the Jewish News article, \u201cNew book traces history of Flagstaff\u2019s Jewish community before and after WWII.\u201d The book was released May 11 at a launch party at Flagstaff\u2019s Bright Side Bookstore.<\/li>\n<li>NAU\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/CEFNS\/CSTL\/Degrees-Programs\/Graduate-Programs\/MAST\/\"><strong>Master of Arts in Science Teaching (MAST)<\/strong><\/a> program was ranked one of the best master&#8217;s degree in science teaching programs by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.affordablecolleges.com\/rankings\/affordable-online-masters-science-education-degrees\/?platform=hootsuite\">Affordable Colleges<\/a>, due to its quality and affordability. This continuing education program focuses solely on science education and is taught by faculty who specialize and conduct research in this field, allowing students to be part of a supportive cohort of high-achieving science teachers. The program is offered in person on the Flagstaff campus or online through video conferencing.<\/li>\n<li>NAU\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/ec.nau.edu\/MastersDegrees\/Administration-Leadership-76\/\"><strong>Master of Administration<\/strong><\/a> with a focus in leadership program was ranked in the top 10 affordable online master\u2019s degrees in organizational management by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.affordablecolleges.com\/rankings\/affordable-online-masters-organizational-management-leadership-degrees\/\">Affordable Colleges<\/a>, based on its quality and affordability. This program assists students in developing leadership skills essential for management and executive roles.<\/li>\n<li>The NAU<strong> Center for International Education<\/strong> hosted 38 visiting staff and faculty from 27 international exchange partner universities for its first exchange partner day. The goal of the event was to strengthen ties, increase student mobility between NAU and its existing exchange partners, and to promote the excellent programs of study offered to international exchange students at NAU.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alexa S. DuMity<\/strong>, part-time instructor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/sbs\/communication\/\">School of Communication<\/a>, has been named a Pedrick Scholar by the Sandra Day O&#8217;Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. A Pedrick Scholar is a law student who, in any single semester in which they have taken at least 10 graded credits, achieved a GPA of 3.5 or higher.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alan A. Lew,<\/strong> professor of geography, planning and recreation in the <a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/sbs\/\">College of Social and Behavioral Sciences<\/a>, recently presented at two international conferences in China and Sweden. Lew discussed the potential of the Japanese concept of Satoyama for sustainable rural tourism development at the 6<sup>th<\/sup> International Conference on Sustainable Tourism and Development at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the 9<sup>th<\/sup> Coastal and Marine Tourism Congress in Gothenburg.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Matt A. Casado<\/strong>, professor emeritus, presented the refereed paper \u201cEthical Principles for the Tourism and Hospitality Curricula\u201d in the 5<sup>th<\/sup> Interdisciplinary Tourism Research Conference at the Universidad Politecnica de Cartagena, Spain.
