NAU was recognized for providing a top-tier education in an online format, supported by outstanding faculty and administrative support. Highlighted was Cline Library\u2019s online database and library staff accessible via online chat and one-on-one phone appointments.<a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Talking-Machine-West-cover-jpg-.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-47220 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Talking-Machine-West-cover-jpg--e1492708791102-269x300.jpg\" alt=\"Talking Machine West cover jpg\" width=\"269\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2017\/04\/Talking-Machine-West-cover-jpg--e1492708791102-269x300.jpg 269w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2017\/04\/Talking-Machine-West-cover-jpg--e1492708791102.jpg 762w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 269px) 100vw, 269px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Michael Amundson<\/strong>, professor of history, recently published a book on the southwest titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oupress.com\/ECommerce\/Book\/Detail\/2222\/talking%20machine%20west\">Talking Machine West: A History and Catalogue of Tin Pan Alley\u2019s Western Recordings, 1902-1918<\/a>.\u201d The book, pictured right, brings together for the first time the variety of cowboy, cowgirl and Indian music recorded and sold for mass consumption between 1902 and 1918. In the book\u2019s introductory chapters, Amundson explains how this music reflected the nostalgic passing of the Indian and the frontier while incorporating modern ragtime music and the racial attitudes of Jim Crow America.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Venkata Yaramasu<\/strong>, assistant professor in the School of Informatics, Computing and Cyber Systems (SICCS), published a book &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wiley.com\/WileyCDA\/WileyTitle\/productCd-1118988582.html\">Model Predictive Control of Wind Energy Conversion Systems<\/a>&#8221; with Bin Wu of Ryerson University. The book, pictured right, provides a comprehensive analysis of model predictive control, a technology that has emerged as a leading approach in the fields of power electronics and energy conversion systems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>T. Mark Montoya<\/strong>, assistant professor of ethnic studies, recently published a chapter entitled &#8220;But It\u2019s a Dry Hate: Illegal-Americans, Other-Americans, and the Citizenship Regime\u201d in White Washing American Education: The New Culture Wars in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc-clio.com\/Praeger\/product.aspx?pc=A4424C\">Ethnic Studies<\/a>, Volume 2: Higher. Montoya also recently published a journal article entitled \u201cBad Fences Make Bad Neighbors: Challenging the Citizenship Regime in the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands,\u201d in Eurasia Border Review, 7(1): 71-85. Finally, Montoya presented his paper, \u201cThe Politics of Taco Trucks, Bad Hombres, and Great Walls: When the United States became Arizona,\u201d at the Association for Borderlands Studies Annual Meetings in San Francisco on April 14.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Laura R. Umphrey<\/strong>, professor of communication in the School of Communication, published one journal article and two book\/encyclopedia chapters this week related to communication studies and research.\u00a0The first publication describes the constitutive relationship to hope, emotional intelligence, stress, and life satisfaction. The second describes evidence-based policy making in relation to the evolving communications realm. The last describes the relationships between variables within communication research methods.<\/li>\n<li>Several NAU faculty recently participated in the Rocky Mountain Council for Latin American Studies conference in Salt Lake City.\u00a0<strong>Susan M. Deeds<\/strong>, emeritus professor of history, spoke on \u201cJudging Sexual Behavior on New Spain\u2019s Northern Frontier.\u201d\u00a0<strong>Jack R. Ferrell<\/strong>, associate professor of sociology at NAU-Yuma, presented his paper, \u201cCesar Chavez and the Farmworkers\u2019 Movement in Arizona: Nonviolence in the Phoenix Fast of 1972.\u201d\u00a0<strong>R. A.
