This is the highest student recognition from the university. \u00a0After reviewing all the Gold Axe nominations, a university committee makes its recommendations to <strong>President Rita Cheng,<\/strong>\u00a0who then selects the President\u2019s Prize winners.<\/p>\n<p>An additional six graduating seniors\u2014<strong>Brianna Zgurich<\/strong>, <strong>Karely Rodriguez<\/strong>, <strong>Amy Wuthrich<\/strong>, <strong>Kiril Kirkov<\/strong>, <strong>Alyssa Kewenvoyouma<\/strong> and <strong>Cheyenne Adamonis<\/strong>\u2014were honored as Distinguished Seniors, an award given by the individual colleges at NAU.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery year we see seniors who work hard, give back to their community, act as leaders both on and off<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_47161\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47161\" style=\"width: 308px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Unknown-2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-47161\" src=\"http:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/wordpresst\/uploads\/sites\/153\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Unknown-2.jpeg\" alt=\"2017 Distinguished Scholars\" width=\"308\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2017\/04\/Unknown-2.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2017\/04\/Unknown-2-300x200.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 308px) 100vw, 308px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-47161\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><br \/> 2017 Distinguished Scholars<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>campus and represent NAU in the best way possible, and we single out the best for the Gold Axe Awards,\u201d President<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Cheng said. \u201cCongratulations to all of the recipients for the contributions they have made to NAU. I am excited to see all that you accomplish as alumni of this great university.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tradition of the Gold Axe Award dates back to 1933, a year after the student body adopted the axe as the symbol for Lumberjack athletics. It was then that NAU adopted the tradition of awarding small gold axe pins to outstanding members of the student body.
