Franke College of Business, recently chaired the annual North American Case Research Associate conference in Quincy, Mass., where more than 100 cases were presented.\u00a0Several colleagues from the college participated, including associate dean <strong>Eric Yordy<\/strong>, who presented an ethics case written with professor <strong>Nita Paden<\/strong> on marketing sugary cereal to children. Associate professor <strong>Chris Scherpereel<\/strong> presented a corporate governance case about the Babbitt ranches written with professor <strong>Lisa Majure<\/strong> and Savage.\u00a0Also during the conference, Savage was elevated from vice president of Programs to president-elect of the organization.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Laura Umphrey<\/strong>, associate professor in the School of Communication, gave a workshop at the biannual <a href=\"http:\/\/missfoundation.org\/newsevents\/conference\">MISS Foundation conference<\/a>, \u201cThe Transformative Nature of Grief,\u201d in Phoenix in October. Her session was titled, \u201cMindful Listening and the Art of Supportive Communication.\u201d\u00a0Umphrey also was a panelist discussing parental bereavement, and she facilitated a bereaved parent support group at the conference.<\/li>\n<li>Leaders of<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/extended.nau.edu\">NAU-Extended Campuses<\/a> shared their insights and expertise at the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education Cooperative for Educational Technologies 24<sup>th\u00a0<\/sup>annual meeting, held Oct. 31-Nov. 3 in San Antonio, Texas.\u00a0<strong>Fred Hurst<\/strong>, senior vice president for Extended Campuses, presented during a panel at a preconference workshop, \u201cForging the Future: What if My Campus Could Guarantee a Four-Year Degree?\u201d During the conference, Hurst, along with <strong>Alison Brown<\/strong>, associate vice president for NAU Personalized Learning, presented on a panel, \u201cInnovative Models for American Universities.\u201d A team, including associate vice president <strong>Karen Pedersen<\/strong>, executive director <strong>Terri Hayes<\/strong> and technology director <strong>Marc Lord\u00a0<\/strong>presented \u201cProcess Mapping: Navigating the Maze!\u201d Additionally, NAU Vice Provost <strong>Karen Pugliesi<\/strong> joined Dan Bartell from Pearson Learning Solutions to present, \u201cBold Strategies Improve Student Success.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Allen Woodman<\/strong>, professor of creative writing in the English Department, had his\u00a0short story\u00a0<em>Wallet<\/em>\u00a0selected by Symphony Space for\u00a0three performances in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.symphonyspace.org\/education\/all_write\">The Selected Shorts: All Write! program<\/a>.\u00a0The live readings of the story by actors will\u00a0be\u00a0recorded for archival purposes.\u00a0In the short-short story, the antics surrounding a lost wallet bring a father and son together. Versions of <em>Wallet<\/em> originally appeared in\u00a0<em>Story<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Micro Fiction, <\/em>and the story was broadcast on NPR. Woodman&#8217;s latest short story, <em>World&#8217;s Best Joke<\/em>, will be published in\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/passagesnorth.com\/\">Passages North<\/a><\/em> in January.\u00a0The story is about how a wrong number phone call leads the narrator to lead a new life.<\/li>\n<li>Seven students have been named Noyce Fellows for <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/CEFNS\/CSTL\/Degrees-Programs\/The-Robert-Noyce-Teacher-Scholarship-Program\/\">the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship<\/a> program, which awards $15,000 to encourage talented undergraduate science, technology, engineering and math majors and post-baccalaureate students holding STEM degrees to earn a teaching credential and commit to teach in high-need school districts. After graduation, the fellows will participate in an induction program for support during their first years of teaching to promote retention. The undergraduate fellows are <strong>Rebecca DeLong<\/strong>, <strong>Todd Gonzales<\/strong>, <strong>Nina Porter<\/strong>, <strong>Kaitlyn VanOrden<\/strong> and <strong>Ashley Visitacion<\/strong>. The post-baccalaureate fellows are <strong>Jenna Samora<\/strong> and <strong>Sone Sithonnorath<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Senior fullback <strong>Jake Hess<\/strong> and sophomore linebacker <strong>Austin Hasquet<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nauathletics.com\/sports\/fball\/2012-13\/releases\/20121109t1ankf\">were both named<\/a> to the 2012 Capital One Academic All\u2010District 8 Football Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/in-the-spotlight-nov-9-2012\/\">Kudos to these faculty, staff and students Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?
