Three of the five teams brought home awards, with the commercial and mixed use teams placing second and the sustainability team receiving honors for best presentation. <strong>Brandon Zirnheld<\/strong> was given a Pinnacle Award for expertise, and <strong>Samantha Standen<\/strong> was given an MVP award for leadership. The winning teams are pictured left.<\/li>\n<li>Climate, science and solution\u00a0student\u00a0<strong>Aaron Mrotek<\/strong>\u00a0was awarded the Wyss Scholarship. Wyss scholars are future conservation leaders who will focus their graduate education on conservation science and policy, with plans to\u00a0apply this knowledge to their field post-graduation. Northern Arizona University is one of four universities associated with the Wyss Scholars program, along with\u00a0Yale, University of Montana and University of Michigan. Receiving this prestigious award\u00a0is an acknowledgement of Mrotek&#8217;s\u00a0leadership, ability and passion for conservation science.<\/li>\n<li>Green NAU was recognized by the athletic department for its\u00a0actions promoting sustainable initiatives throughout the campus and community. The City of Flagstaff&#8217;s sustainability mascot, Albert the Abert squirrel, recently gave out wood cookies to\u00a0<strong>Hannah Parrish<\/strong>\u00a0for her work as an outstanding eco-rep,\u00a0<strong>Carlie Calloway<\/strong>\u00a0for her work as chair of NAU\u2019s student environmental club, The Green Jacks, and\u00a0<strong>Emerald McCormick<\/strong>\u00a0who chairs the Green Fund, which gets sustainable projects funded across campus.<\/li>\n<li>Graduate student\u00a0<strong>Corderro McMurray\u00a0<\/strong>was recently interviewed and featured in <em>Cosmopolitan<\/em>. His recent term paper entitled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cosmopolitan.com\/entertainment\/celebs\/a8972706\/kardashians-term-paper-graduate-student-revenge-body\/\">How a Kardashian Changed My Life<\/a>,&#8221; written for his critical methods class, was the topic of discussion. The paper focuses on Khlo\u00e9 Kardashian&#8217;s TV show\u00a0<em>Revenge Body<\/em>\u00a0on<em>\u00a0<\/em>E! Network, and addresses people&#8217;s concern with body image.\u00a0McMurray will graduate with a master of arts in communications this May.<\/li>\n<li>International affairs student\u00a0<strong>Austin Rock<\/strong>\u00a0was recently awarded by the Center for International Relations\u2019 International Affairs Forum for his research and work concerning the country of Yemen. Having studied the country since 2013, Rock&#8217;s\u00a0article, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ia-forum.org\/Content\/ViewInternalDocument.cfm?ContentID=8661\">What Factors Have Perpetuated Instability in Yemen<\/a>,\u201d stemmed from research he did as a politics and international affairs\u00a0student.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/student-spotlight-march-2-2017\/\">Kudos to these\u00a0students Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?
