{"id":460,"date":"2012-05-02T16:01:12","date_gmt":"2012-05-02T23:01:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www2.nau.edu\/news-p\/wordpress\/?p=460"},"modified":"2012-10-30T14:55:06","modified_gmt":"2012-10-30T21:55:06","slug":"nau-alumnus-former-regent-named-man-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/nau-alumnus-former-regent-named-man-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"NAU alumnus, former regent named Man of the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NAU alumnus\u00a0<strong>Ernest Calder\u00f3n<\/strong>, former member and\u00a0<a title=\"ABOR President Calder\u00f3n expresses gratitude to board, university presidents and faculty\" href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/abor-president-calderon-expresses-gratitude-to-board-university-presidents-and-faculty\/\">president emeritus<\/a>\u00a0of the Arizona Board of Regents, will be honored at the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce\u2019s 54th annual Black and White Ball and Business Awards this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Calder\u00f3n will be presented with the chamber\u2019s Man of the Year award on Saturday, May 5, at the Phoenix Convention Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny success that I have had is due to others\u2019 either leading the charge or helping carry the task\u2019s weight,\u201d Calder\u00f3n said.\u00a0\u201cI certainly wouldn\u2019t be in a position to help people if it wasn\u2019t for the support and education I received at Northern Arizona University. Lumberjacks help others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Calder\u00f3n earned his bachelor\u2019s degree in political science with a minor in business administration from NAU in 1979 and served as president of the Associated Students of NAU his senior year. He earned a juris doctorate from the University of Arizona College of Law in 1982 and a graduate certificate from Northwestern University\u2019s Kellogg School of Management in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Calder\u00f3n was appointed to ABOR in 2004 by then Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano and served an eight-year term on the board that ended with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/ABOR_PR_NewRegentAppointees.pdf\">recent appointment<\/a>\u00a0of Greg Patterson of Scottsdale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegent Calder\u00f3n has been a strong advocate on behalf of Northern Arizona University and higher education in this state,\u201d said NAU President\u00a0<strong>John Haeger<\/strong>. \u201cHe is a dedicated public servant and highly deserving of the Man of the Year award.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to receiving numerous awards in recognition of his volunteer service and professional achievements, Calder\u00f3n was the first Latino elected to serve as president of the State Bar of Arizona.
