{"id":44757,"date":"2016-08-17T15:05:35","date_gmt":"2016-08-17T22:05:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=44757"},"modified":"2016-08-17T15:06:38","modified_gmt":"2016-08-17T22:06:38","slug":"high-school-students-learn-summer-lessons-nau","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/high-school-students-learn-summer-lessons-nau\/","title":{"rendered":"High school students learn summer lessons at NAU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As high school juniors throughout the region get started with a new school year, some students will have broader perspectives on emerging technologies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cefns.nau.edu\/Groups\/dasl\/\">NAU\u2019s Dynamic and Active Systems Lab<\/a> partnered with<a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/upward-bound\/\"> the Upward Bound Summer Academy program <\/a>to engage high school students in energy harvesting and development of drone technology. The lab is part of NAU\u2019s Department of Mechanical Engineering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 23 students spent four\u00a0weeks on campus at NAU learning about climate change, energy science and engineering,\u201d said <strong>Karin Wadsack<\/strong>, project director in the School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Sustainability. \u201cThey tested solar panels, built electrical circuits, participated in a wildlife-tracking hide-and-seek exercise and learned about renewable energy through hands-on activities with <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/cefns\/engineering\/mechanical\/research-and-labs\/energy\/education\/wind-for-schools\/\">the Arizona Wind for Schools program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another student activity was working with unmanned aerial vehicles. NAU researchers <strong>Michael Shafer<\/strong> and <strong>Paul Flikkema<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/nsf-grant-help-nau-grow-share-drone-technology\/#.V7OZ32WTXq0\">were awarded a $601,896 National Science Foundation grant<\/a> to produce a UAV system, which will be shared with wildlife biologists who want to improve their systems of tracking and monitoring wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParticipating students benefited from working with the UAVs,\u201d said <strong>Jacob Lesandrini<\/strong>, an instructional specialist with the Upward Bound Program. \u201cAdditionally, they were pushed to understand the science behind energy, energy consumption and the future of energy use in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Organizers say the high school students enjoyed learning about the Dynamic and Active Systems Lab, which received another\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/nau-research-powering-marine-science-sensors-with-ambient-energy\/#.V7ObDmWTXq0\">NSF grant to develop and test energy harvesting technologies<\/a>\u00a0for use on marine mammals.<\/p>\n<p>The Summer Academy is a residential program to introduce high school students to the university environment and academics.
