{"id":44435,"date":"2016-06-22T08:28:01","date_gmt":"2016-06-22T15:28:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=44435"},"modified":"2016-06-23T06:39:36","modified_gmt":"2016-06-23T13:39:36","slug":"genocide-resource-project-helps-educators-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/genocide-resource-project-helps-educators-students\/","title":{"rendered":"The Genocide Resource Project helps educators and students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The nightly news shows us in graphic detail that the lessons of the past are sadly still the lessons of today.<\/p>\n<p>No one knows this better than Northern Arizona University\u2019s criminology and criminal justice professor\u00a0<strong>Alex Alvarez<\/strong>, whose main areas of study include collective and interpersonal violence, including homicide and genocide.<\/p>\n<p>Alvarez, alongside the College of Engineering, Forestry and Natural Sciences\u2019 senior support systems analyst\u00a0<strong>Shawn Fowler<\/strong>, founded NAU\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/grp.nau.edu\">Genocide Resource Project<\/a>. The website is intended to provide scholars, researchers and educators with genocide and Holocaust related data that can be used for analysis and teaching related purposes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is truly a passion project that is a work in progress,\u201d Alvarez said. \u201cSo far, we\u2019ve not only experienced a number of\u00a0international researchers and educators utilizing our website, but we\u2019ve also seen NAU students benefit\u00a0from helping develop the site\u2019s content and earn undergraduate research credit while doing so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A<a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Genocide-Resource-project-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-44438\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Genocide-Resource-project-2-300x180.png\" alt=\"Genocide Resource project 2\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2016\/06\/Genocide-Resource-project-2-300x180.png 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2016\/06\/Genocide-Resource-project-2-768x461.png 768w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2016\/06\/Genocide-Resource-project-2-1024x615.png 1024w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2016\/06\/Genocide-Resource-project-2.png 1216w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>ccording to the founders of the project, genocide is perhaps the most destructive of all forms of collective violence. Even though the 20th\u00a0century has often been perceived as an age of total war, the Genocide Resource Project believes it should more accurately be referred to as an age of genocide. Genocides killed more than four times as many people as all the wars, civil wars, and revolutions combined. Historically targeted groups have included Jews, Native Americans, Armenians, Rwandan Tutsi, Bosnian Muslims, and members of Fur, Zaghawa, and Massalit.<\/p>\n<p>When it is completed, The Genocide Resource Project will comprise\u00a0a number of different genocide related databases and a Geographic Information System of genocide. Currently, the Der Sturmer Archives\u2014a comprehensive archive comprised of propaganda cartoons that were featured on the front page of Nazi newspaper, Der Sturmer\u2014are a featured project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our globalized and interconnected world, genocidal events are increasingly becoming part of the political, social and economic landscape,\u201d Alvarez said. \u201cThis means that many around the world do not\u00a0have the knowledge or information necessary to make sense of these catastrophes or if resources do exist, they are hard to find.
