{"id":43913,"date":"2016-05-12T16:08:41","date_gmt":"2016-05-12T23:08:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=43913"},"modified":"2016-05-12T16:27:25","modified_gmt":"2016-05-12T23:27:25","slug":"nau-adopts-tobacco-free-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/nau-adopts-tobacco-free-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"NAU adopts tobacco-free campus policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After several years of student advocacy and campus discussion, Northern Arizona University will become a <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/tobacco-free\/\">smoke- and tobacco-free campus<\/a> beginning July 1, 2016.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis initiative reflects NAU\u2019s strong commitment to wellness and public health, driving principles in what we do each day to create a healthy environment for our students and staff,\u201d said NAU President <strong>Rita Cheng<\/strong>. \u201cOur current policies prohibit smoking inside university buildings and vehicles. However, they do not address the health risks associated with secondhand smoke, or the environmental issues caused by tobacco products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An implementation committee composed of campus representatives is leading the initiative, and working to ensure an effective implementation over the next academic year.\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">The Student Health Advocacy Committee\u00a0led discussion and advocacy efforts\u00a0for a tobacco-free policy over the last four years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The committee created\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/tobacco-free\/\">nau.edu\/tobacco-free<\/a>\u00a0to offer resources including cessation programs, address the most commonly asked questions about tobacco-free policies and outline\u00a0implementation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d like to thank the campus community for their support as we join the ranks of more than 1,400 higher education institutions that have already gone smoke and tobacco-free,\u201d Cheng said.<\/p>\n<p>The policy is available at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/Tobacco-Free\/Policy\/\">nau.edu\/tobacco-free\/policy<\/a>.
