In their article, \u201cWoody Debris and Tree Regeneration Dynamics Following Severe Wildfires in Arizona Ponderosa Pine Forests,\u201d the researchers report that, following severe wildfires, many severely burned areas become vegetated with grasses or deciduous shrubs, a long-term condition that makes ponderosa pine regeneration difficult, especially in the face of a warmer, drier climate. The paper can be viewed\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/library.eri.nau.edu\/gsdl\/collect\/erilibra\/index\/assoc\/HASHd898.dir\/doc.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Northern Arizona University saw several members of its community recognized at the Flagstaff Cultural Partners 2012 Viola Awards ceremony at the High Country Conference Center on March 3. The awards recognize artists, educators, organizations and leaders who make positive contributions to the arts and sciences in Flagstaff. Among the award winners from NAU were:\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li><strong>Ann Cummins<\/strong>, English professor, who received the Literature Award<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pam Stephens<\/strong>, associate professor in the School of Art, who received the Arts Educator Award<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pat Curry<\/strong>, former chair of the music department, who posthumously received the Viola Legacy Award<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kari Barton<\/strong>, Suzuki and Fiddle Instructor in the School of Music, who received the Music Award<\/li>\n<li>The<strong>\u00a0Flagstaff Festival of Science<\/strong>, which received the Outstanding Event Award. NAU is a partner in the festival, and its Mountain Campus Science and Engineering Day features numerous faculty and staff<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Several others from NAU were nominated for awards, including\u00a0<strong>Michael Vincent,<\/strong>\u00a0dean of the College of Arts and Letters;\u00a0<strong>KNAU Arizona Public Radio<\/strong>; the College of Arts and Letters\u00a0<strong>Classic Film Series<\/strong>;\u00a0<strong>Tina Ayers<\/strong>, associate professor of biology;\u00a0<strong>Franklin Willis<\/strong>,\u00a0associate professor\u00a0in the School of Art;\u00a0<strong>Rita Borden<\/strong>,\u00a0principal lecturer\u00a0in the School of Music;<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>the<strong>\u00a0Department of Theater;<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Steve Schaeffer,<\/strong>\u00a0assistant professor of practice\u00a0in the School of Art;\u00a0<strong>Seth Muller<\/strong>, part-time faculty in the School of Communication; and\u00a0<strong>Matt Beaty<\/strong>, undergraduate photography and marketing major.<\/li>\n<li>Research by\u00a0<strong>Heidi Wayment<\/strong>\u00a0was recently featured in General Electric\u2019s online health blog under the title \u201cCan a \u2018Quiet Ego\u2019 Make You Healthier?\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anne Marie\u00a0Mackler<\/strong>, development coordinator for University Advancement, spearheaded the annual Report to Donors video project for the NAU Foundation,\u00a0called\u00a0<em>The Chemistry of Giving: A Catalyst for the Future<\/em>, which received a 2012 CASE District VII Gold Award of Excellence from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Watch the video\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.advancement.nau.edu\/nauf_video_report.shtml\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>NAU Ice Jacks<\/strong>\u00a0club hockey team has qualified for the America Collegiate Hockey Association national finals\u00a0by winning both games at the regional tournament in Fremont, Calif., in February. The team is ranked\u00a0as one of the top 16 teams in the country\u00a0out of the 192 teams in Division 2.
