Reich<\/strong>, professor in the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management, was one of five academics invited to participate in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodprotect.org\/\">Conference for Food Protection<\/a> in Boise, Idaho. The biennial meeting brings together representatives from the food industry, government, academia and consumer organizations to identify and address emerging problems of food safety and to formulate recommendations. Reich will contribute to the FDA\u2019s Division of Human Resource Development regarding the creation of a consistent food safety training process. The agreement brings long-term sustainability to the initial <a href=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/nau-expanding-partnership-with-argentine-students\/#.VxzlE_krLIU\">100,000 Strong in the Americas project<\/a>, enabling field course exchange in geology and energy policy. Cultural attach\u00e9 Christine Meyer joined the signing ceremony representing the U.S. Department of State.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Northern Arizona University <\/strong>has been named a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arborday.org\/programs\/treecampususa\/\">Tree Campus USA<\/a> by the Arbor Day Foundation. The national program honors colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and for engaging staff and students in conservation goals. NAU achieved the honor by meeting Tree Campus USA\u2019s five standards, which include maintaining a tree advisory committee, a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance and student service-learning project.<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Jut Wynne,<\/b>\u00a0of NAU\u2019s Merriam-Powell Center for Environmental Research, gave a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/events\/cv16236m2o5tkopivqaba0puivs?hl=en\"><span class=\"s2\">Google Hangout talk<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.exploringbytheseat.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Exploring by the Seat of Your Pants<\/span><\/a>, a program that connects students with guest speaker lessons and virtual field trips around the world. The pair discussed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/NativeAmericanBroadcastWorkshop\/\">Andy Harvey Native American Broadcast Journalism workshop<\/a>\u00a0that brings 20 high school students to NAU each summer for a week of hands-on radio and TV broadcast training.<\/li>\n<li>Students and faculty in the <a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/cal\/english\/degrees-programs\/graduate\/ma-tesl\/\">NAU Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language program<\/a> traveled to Baltimore to host the Master\u2019s Student Forum at the 2016 TESOL International Convention. Second-year graduate students <strong>Kevin Hirschi<\/strong>, <strong>Jesse Conway<\/strong> and <strong>Aysenur Sagdic <\/strong>organized and chaired the student forum alongside faculty advisor <strong>William Crawford<\/strong>. The award helps cover field costs for \u201chard-working, passionate, creative individuals with great ideas.\u201d Working under the supervision of anthropology professor <strong>Jaime Awe<\/strong>, Watkins will spend her summer excavating a palace complex at the Belize River Valley site of Lower Dover as part of the Belize Valley Archaeological Reconnaissance Project. Through her research Watkins hopes to determine when the palace complex was constructed, whether the occupants were members of the site\u2019s ruling elite and when the palace was abandoned.<\/li>\n<li>Under the direction of associate professor <strong>Patricia Murphy<\/strong>, NAU VisualDESIGNLab students are finalizing a comprehensive brand identity project for A New Dawn AZ, a new non-profit established to increase access to comprehensive and restorative dental services. The partnership allows School of Communication students to use their design thinking skills for the greater good. Participating students include\u00a0<strong>Kayla Velasquez<\/strong>, <strong>Elana Leifer<\/strong>, <strong>Lauren Pantages<\/strong> and <strong>George Chi<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Thirteen students gave presentations on their year-long NASA Space Grant-funded projects at the Arizona Space Grant Consortium Undergraduate Research Internship Program held in Tucson on April 16.
