{"id":43187,"date":"2016-04-19T16:27:33","date_gmt":"2016-04-19T23:27:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=43187"},"modified":"2016-04-20T11:07:06","modified_gmt":"2016-04-20T18:07:06","slug":"nau-rocket-men-to-compete-at-first-nations-launch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/nau-rocket-men-to-compete-at-first-nations-launch\/","title":{"rendered":"NAU rocket men to compete at First Nations Launch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Northern Arizona University students are answering a higher calling this weekend at <a href=\"https:\/\/spacegrant.carthage.edu\/first-nations-launch\/\">First Nations Launch<\/a>, a rocket-launching competition open to Native American and indigenous students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Robert Castellanos<\/strong>, a third-year physics major and project manager for NAU\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/cefns\/student-resources\/aises\/\">American Indian Science and Engineering Society club<\/a>, and <strong>Adam Clark<\/strong>, a senior electrical engineering major and AISES club member, will debut their rocket at the NASA\u00a0Wisconsin Space Grant consortium April 21\u201323.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the launch just days away, the pressure is on to cover all bases, including structural issues we recently found during construction,&#8221; Castellanos said. \u201cAesthetically speaking, &#8216;Ollie&#8217; the rocket is blue, yellow and white and will proudly wear the NAU logo on launch day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The First Nations Launch competition offers tribal colleges and universities, as well as AISES chapter students, the opportunity to explore high-powered rocketry by demonstrating engineering and design skills through direct application.\u00a0Student teams design and construct a high-powered rocket\u2014reaching an altitude goal of 3,000\u20134,000 feet above ground\u2014that will carry a payload capable of deploying a self-constructing \u201cspace station\u201d or satellite during its descent. All teams are expected to retrieve their rockets in \u201cflyable\u201d condition.<\/p>\n<p>While competition regulations state only students are permitted to construct the rockets, Castellanos and Clark will\u00a0receive moral support from\u00a0AISES faculty advisors, <strong>Kyle Winfree<\/strong> and <strong>Dave Cole<\/strong>, who will accompany the rocketeers during their trip.<\/p>\n<p>Castellanos and Clark have their sights set on first place, which includes a cash prize of $3,000 and an invitation to the Kennedy Space Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaunch day is absolutely the most anticipated day of this competition, as it is a perfect display of the amount of work that goes into research, construction and overall dedication,\u201d Clark said. \u201cIt counters all of the difficulties that we endure, during construction, with a gigantic rush of positive energy.
