Her recently published Ted Talk is approaching 2 million views.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>March is International Listening Month and alumna Celeste Headlee shares her tips for listening, one of\u00a0the most important skills a person can develop.<\/p>\n<p>Here are excerpts from her Ted Talk:<\/p>\n<p>Listen.\u00a0I cannot tell you how many really important people have said\u00a0that listening is perhaps the most, the number one most important skill\u00a0that you could develop.\u00a0Buddha said, and I&#8217;m paraphrasing,\u00a0&#8220;If your mouth is open, you&#8217;re not learning.&#8221;\u00a0And Calvin Coolidge said, &#8220;No man ever listened his way out of a job.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Why\u00a0do we not listen to each other?\u00a0Number one, we&#8217;d rather talk.\u00a0When I&#8217;m talking, I&#8217;m in control.\u00a0I don&#8217;t have to hear anything I&#8217;m not interested in.\u00a0I&#8217;m the center of attention.\u00a0I can bolster my own identity.\u00a0But there&#8217;s another reason:\u00a0We get distracted.\u00a0The average person talks at about 225 word per minute,\u00a0but we can listen at up to 500 words per minute.\u00a0So our minds are filling in those other 275 words.\u00a0And look, I know, it takes effort and energy\u00a0to actually pay attention to someone,\u00a0but if you can&#8217;t do that, you&#8217;re not in a conversation.\u00a0You&#8217;re just two people shouting out barely related sentences\u00a0in the same place.<\/p>\n<p>You\u00a0have to listen to one another.\u00a0Stephen Covey said it very beautifully.\u00a0He said, &#8220;Most of us don&#8217;t listen with the intent to understand.\u00a0We listen with the intent to reply.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Celeste Headlee: 10 ways to have a better conversation\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.ted.com\/talks\/celeste_headlee_10_ways_to_have_a_better_conversation\" width=\"640\" height=\"361\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s note: Headlee\u00a0earned an undergraduate degree from NAU in 1995.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/international-listening-month\/\">by Celeste Headlee, radio host, NAU alumna\u00a0and expert listener March is International Listening Month and alumna Celeste Headlee shares her tips for listening, one of\u00a0the most important skills a person can develop.
