The 2016 rankings considered c<\/span><span class=\"s2\">olleges that provide students with military and academic support programs, financial aid services, credit transfer choices and participate in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.benefits.va.gov\/gibill\/yellow_ribbon.asp\"><span class=\"s1\">Yellow Ribbon program<\/span><\/a>. Schools also were evaluated on military culture, online support and flexibility. The complete list of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guidetoonlineschools.com\/online-schools\/military-friendly#top-yellow-ribbon-schools\"><span class=\"s1\">2016 rankings can be found online<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Bj\u00f6rn Krondorfer<\/strong>, director of the Martin-Springer Institute and professor of comparative religious studies, had a chapter titled \u201cMasculinities and Identity\u201d published in the <em>Handbook of Global Contemporary Christianity<\/em>.\u00a0In January, his chapter \u201cUnsettling Empathy: Intercultural Dialogue in the Aftermath of Historical and Cultural Trauma\u201d appeared in <em>Breaking Intergenerational Cycles of Repetition: A Global Dialogue on Historical Trauma and Memory<\/em>. Another chapter titled \u201cReligion und Theologie,\u201d published in <em>M\u00e4nnlichkeiten,<\/em> is the first survey on men and masculinities in the world religions. Krondorfer also guest-edited a special issue \u201cAntisemitism and Islamophobia: Probing the History and Dynamics of Hate\u201d in the journal <em>CrossCurrents<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>School of Forestry doctoral students <strong>Kristina Young<\/strong> and <strong>Henry Grover<\/strong>, along with forestry professor <strong>Matthew Bowker<\/strong>, published an article in the international journal <em>New Phytologist<\/em>. The article titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/nph.13910\/full\">Altering biocrusts for an altered climate<\/a>\u201d discussed the biocrust session at the <a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/merriam-powell\/biennial-conference\/\">Biennial Conference of Science and Management on the Colorado Plateau and Southwest Region<\/a> held last October in Flagstaff.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brant Short, <\/strong>professor in the School of Communication, had an essay titled &#8220;&#8216;Conserving not scenery as much as the human spirit itself&#8217;: The Environmental Oratory of Sigurd Olson&#8221; published in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunypress.edu\/p-6117-green-voices.aspx\">Green Voices: Defending Nature and the Environment in American Civic Discourse<\/a>. The book, released March 1, examines the broad sweep of America\u2019s environmental history from the perspective of famous and influential environmental figures. The collection is divided into fifteen case studies of significant environmental speeches and speakers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Betsy Buford<\/strong>, lecturer for Academic Transition Programs, and <strong>Raymond Chaira,<\/strong> instructional technologist for e-Learning Center, were selected to present at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.academicintegrity.org\/icai\/events-1.php\">the International Center for Academic Integrity\u2019s annual conference<\/a> in Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M. During their session titled \u201cFostering Culture of Academic Integrity,\u201d the pair discussed student and faculty expectations of academic integrity in the classroom. The session also provided best practices, course design, discussion and an overview of NAU\u2019s Academic Integrity Workshop in Bb Learn. The presentation has been given at NAU and online through the <a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/ContentTemplate.aspx?id=6442464763\">Faculty Professional Development program<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Northern Arizona University<\/strong> was named among <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greatcollegedeals.net\/rankings\/best-deals-colleges-native-american-studies\/\">the top colleges for Native American Studies<\/a> by Great College Deals. Schools were selected based on the presence of a well-rounded Native American studies curriculum, field-related internships and scholarship options. NAU offers both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science in <a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/SBS\/AIS\/Degrees-Programs\/\">Applied Indigenous Studies<\/a> as well as four AIS minors. The rankings also highlighted, NAU\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/nau.edu\/registrar\/pledge\/our-pledge\/\">Pledge program<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nau.edu\/admissions\/financing\/western-undergraduate-exchange\/\">reduced tuition<\/a> for residents of most western states.<\/li>\n<li>Undergraduates <strong>Kaitlyn Haskie<\/strong> and <strong>Brittany Begaye<\/strong> were accepted into the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases <a href=\"http:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/research-funding\/process\/diversity\/research-and-training-for-students\/summer-research-training-program\/Pages\/summer-internship-program.aspx\">Summer Research Training program<\/a>. The students will spend the summer at the National Institute of Health&#8217;s campus in Bethesda, Md. At the end of the\u00a0program, they will have the opportunity to participate in the NIH Summer Research Poster Day and share their work with the scientific community.<\/li>\n<li>NAU <a href=\"https:\/\/nau.edu\/admissions\/after-you-apply\/orientation\/become-a-leader\/\">Ambassadors<\/a>\u00a0received the Best Student Presentation Award at the Association for Orientation, Transition\u00a0and\u00a0Retention in Higher Education&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/noda.site-ym.com\/?page=region_2_conference\">regional conference<\/a> in Pomona.\u00a0Undergraduates <strong>Shannon O&#8217;Neill<\/strong>, <strong>Taylor Hudzinski<\/strong>, <strong>Kyle Weiss<\/strong> and <strong><strong>Kiersten G<b>aetano<\/b>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong>received the showcase award\u00a0for their presentation titled\u00a0\u201cGoing the Extra Mile.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/in-the-spotlight-march-4-2016\/\">Kudos to these faculty, staff and students Do you have a spotlight item to share with the NAU community?
