{"id":42041,"date":"2016-02-25T20:30:29","date_gmt":"2016-02-26T03:30:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/?p=42041"},"modified":"2016-02-25T21:34:47","modified_gmt":"2016-02-26T04:34:47","slug":"campus-leader-shares-passion-for-education-with-high-school-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/campus-leader-shares-passion-for-education-with-high-school-students\/","title":{"rendered":"NAU is not a secret for a growing number of high school students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NAU is a university known for supporting its students, including first-generation and ethnic minority students, said <strong>Wanda Costen<\/strong>, executive director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/hrm.nau.edu\">School of Hotel Restaurant Management<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Costen has been traveling to the greater Phoenix area and nearby Native American reservations to talk with high school students about NAU.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNAU strives to be the number one academic institution for Native Americans,\u201d Costen said.\u00a0\u201cWith our campus being so close to the Hopi Tribe and the Navajo Nation,\u00a0it makes sense to reach out and let them know we are an institution where they can get their academic credentials, and use that knowledge to better their communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Costen, who came to NAU in 2014, developed a three-part outreach strategy: visiting high schools, engaging students during NAU campus visits and encouraging would-be college students to share information about NAU\u2019s opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Her efforts are paying off.<\/p>\n<p>During a trip to Apollo High School in Glendale, Costen invited students to see NAU\u2019s School of Hotel and Restaurant Management. A group of 35 students\u00a0visited the Flagstaff campus for tours and presentations, including students who\u00a0have been accepted to NAU and others who indicated they planned to apply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we get students on campus and inside this building, they tend to want to come here,\u201d Costen\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p>NAU&#8217;s School of Hotel Restaurant Management is consistently ranked among the\u00a0nation\u2019s top hospitality programs.<\/p>\n<p>Costen is a first-generation college student who said she enjoys sharing her passion for higher education with high school students, and encouraging some of the state\u2019s best talent to choose NAU and the benefits that come with being a Lumberjack.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"search-results-excerpt-link\" href=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/news\/campus-leader-shares-passion-for-education-with-high-school-students\/\">NAU is a university known for supporting its students, including first-generation and ethnic minority students, said Wanda Costen, executive director of the School of Hotel Restaurant Management.
