The honor recognizes a librarian who has made a significant contribution to the advancement of instruction in a college or research library environment. Holliday will receive a $1,000 award and be recognized with a plaque at the 2016 ALA annual conference in Orlando.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Michelle Tellez<\/strong>, project director for Beyond Boundaries in the Ethnic Studies department,\u00a0was\u00a0selected to receive a $2,000 grant from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.azhumanities.org\/\"><strong>Arizona Humanities,<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0a nonprofit which supports projects that engage the public with humanities through public programming. With the award, Tellez will continue the university&#8217;s\u00a0Beyond Boundaries programming bringing speakers, activists, media makers and artists to the NAU campus to increase\u00a0dialogue and research paradigms around the topic of border crossings and disruptions, identity and community formations across multiple borderlands.<\/li>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-41711\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/SW-Day-at-the-Legislature-2016-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Capitol visit\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2016\/02\/SW-Day-at-the-Legislature-2016-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2016\/02\/SW-Day-at-the-Legislature-2016-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2016\/02\/SW-Day-at-the-Legislature-2016-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Nearly 60 students from NAU\u2019s <strong>Social Work program<\/strong> traveled to the Capitol this week to participate in Social Work Day at the Legislature. Students visited the Senate Chambers where they had the opportunity to learn about the National Association of Social Workers legislative priorities for 2016 and to advocate for the issues concerning social workers in Arizona. Students also met with three House Representatives and later observed the House in session. Students also were\u00a0provided the opportunity to attend a session of the Committee on Health and Human Services.<\/li>\n<li><strong>John Hultgren<\/strong>, lecturer in the Department of Politics and International Affairs, was interviewed on Pacifica Radio&#8217;s talk show &#8220;Against the Grain.&#8221; Hultgren weighed in on the history and contemporary politics of environmentalists and immigration restrictionism and discussed his recent book, <em>Border Walls Gone Green: Nature and Anti-immigrant Politics in America<\/em>. Listen to\u00a0the interview <a href=\"http:\/\/againstthegrain.org\/program\/1300\/wed-11316-environmentalism-against-immigrants\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ishmael Munene<\/strong>, associate professor of educational leadership, has been appointed external examiner at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto. The assignment, which begins next month, will focus on doctoral research theses with specific reference to education in Africa.<\/li>\n<li>NAU\u2019s <strong>Cline Library<\/strong> contributed a pre-conference session at the 2015 Arizona Library Association Conference held at High Country Conference Center. The session titled \u201cSo, You Have a Big Dream\u2014Make It Come True! Lessons Learned fro<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-41713\" src=\"http:\/\/stage.headlessnauedu-b6hgdzckfdgxgzhe.westus-01.azurewebsites.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/IntlStudentsSedona-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"IntlStudentsSedona\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2016\/02\/IntlStudentsSedona-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2016\/02\/IntlStudentsSedona-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/in.nau.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/402\/2016\/02\/IntlStudentsSedona-1024x683.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>m Creating an Advanced Technology University Learning Studio in the Library\u201d discussed the library\u2019s Learning Studio renovation project, planning and assessment efforts. Contributors included <strong>Cynthia Childrey<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Jill Koelling Friedmann<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Jeff Hillock<\/strong>, <strong>Janet Crum<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Laura Rose Taylor\u00a0<\/strong>and\u2028\u00a0<strong>Mark Manone<\/strong>.\u00a0Poster session participants included\u00a0<strong>Suzanne L. Pieper<\/strong>, <strong>Laura Rose Taylor<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Melissa L. Johnson<\/strong>, <strong>Kathee Rose<\/strong>, <strong>Theresa Alarid<\/strong> and <strong>Peter Runge<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>NAU welcomed\u00a0more than\u00a0700 new international students and 43 visiting scholars to campus in the 2015-16 academic year. International student orientation in January included a day trip to Red Rock State Park in Sedona, pictured above.
